Latest Z32 Fad: The RB Swap
Once upon a time, it was talked about but always relegated to flights of pointless fancy, but over the past year the RB swap in the Z32 seems to have come of age. Despite there being many opponents and a growing number of proponents it is still a rather controversial swap in the Z community. At any rate since there has not been much in the way of Z32 threads lately, I thought I would share one of the cleaner swaps I have seen thus far.

Thoughts, opinions, etc...

Well, I don't know if I would say that. The VG30DETT has plenty of potential as has been proven by any number of the purposefully built ones in the community, though the RB opens up new doors and opportunities as well. In regards of being easier to work on, thats 50/50 its pretty crammed in there either way, just takes a certain finesse.

I think this is an amazing swap.
As soon as my girlfriend finds a clean chassis, we are going to be doing this.

I mean it's cool and all... But i don't understand why. The VG30DETT is plenty potent and already comes with the car (and is good for over 550whp with stock internals... why someone would want more in a street car is beyond me). Very nice looking Z nonetheless, it is probably easier to work on now too.

maybe for the fact that not many people have done rb swaps into z chassis's. yes the VG is a strong motor dont get me wrong, with gt725 turbos on 38 ibs, you can easily run mid to hig 800hp, but if you put that toward an rb, youd probably be getting alot higher numbers.

clean specimen you found Rob. I just dont get why swap out a VG for a RB? I can see that its easier to work on but its still a down grade. Why not swap in a built VQ?

when it comes to performance, it seems to be a bit of a side step...
but when it comes to the cool factor, the RB wins.
but thats my 2 cents

it looks baller as fuck too. good stuff for a garage queen show car. im sure it goes too. it looks so nice i think i'd be afraid to drive it. also where the in and outs of the i/c piping looks neat there in the bumper holes

I had fancied this swap when I still had my Z and when I had the motor out of my car last time, out of curiosity I dropped a RB block and head in it just for mockup and all I can say is ... notice that Z does not have a hood on it ? ... Just too tall of a motor to get good oil pan clearance if it is not dry sump.

I have zero play time with a RB, and somewhat minimal with a VG, but aren't the RB's a little less picky when it comes to being modified?
And aren't the RB's a little more robust?
I think I would prefer to have the RB, for so many reasons. It's a bad-ass swap.Determined to be famous, destined to be infamous.

That's bad azz.......
Question did you lose anything??..A/C, power ster...Ext...
I know with the RB swap for 350z's you lose the A/C and power ster.... And for the 240 guys the modified mag. I think it was 2 months ago showed a VQ motor & Single Turbo setup in a 240 and it was nice...The only bad part about the RB is that the technology is 10-15 years old....A stroked out VQ 3.5 to 4.2L with bult motor can push the 1000hp mark and could street run around 860+hp not problem...Non the less VERY SWEET!!!!
350z..AT..3inch exhuast/Nismo Y-pipe/Pop-charger intake/ Motordyne 5\16 spacer/Brallie Battery/ Stoptech Rotors & pads/18 inch TSW Thruxtons/Defi boost gauge & controller/Aries 8.5-1 pistons/ Sperco inter./Turbnetics pipes/ F/I very soon!!!

i think its a pretty sweet set-up, but it depends on what it is you want to do.
for a import enthusiast as myself, i have a very very tight budget, so swapping out a already twin turbo motor for another would be out of the question
but for those who are going for a very showy and out-there car as well with huge speed gains then yea i can see why, but i personally would rather build the VG
thats my .02
