Oh my god are you f*cking kidding me !!

So I took the manifold off just cause and look what I find !!

That shit has been sitting in there since I bought the car almost 3 years ago. I can't wait to get it back together and see how it runs. no wonder the car never pulled good above 5,000

There you go...
Something like that could explain a lot of things about how your car was.
The extra backpressure that thing would've been causing could also dilute the fresh air charge or air going in; and could also explain a lot of your knock
(safe to assume you were dealing with real knock not pk.)
Once you get it back together you may be able to advance the cas back to normal.

Everything happens for a reason, well now at least when you get her back together you will have a fresh head gasket and ARP's and like I said before just get that 2gmas, a Eprom ecu and get it socketed and I can tune you with a reburnable eprom chip and then youll just need to get yourself some injectors and a fmic and higher boost and your car should be pulling hard in no time, and your next thread after that will be now my clutch is slipping : ) !

thats the fire ring. it is supposed to be a "o" not a "6"
it sits in the groove between the turbo and manifold.
it keeps extreme heat from burning gasket out quickly. if edge of gasket is exposed to fire the gasket will only last a short time. if you take it out the two flanges should be planed flat so no gasket is needed.

it was hindering spool. prolly didnt affect back pressure much.
