If the right maintenance has been kept up it will be reliable. Best bet is to do all the maintenance items right off the bat instead of wondering when they will break. Bottom line on a DSM is if you cant some what work on cars yourself to save money you will be sorry.

+1 cuz any problem ive ever had was stupid like shotty couplers, needless to say boost leak...and you would think there was something really wrong when all yu need is a screwdriver and a flashlight if its dark...
i spent about 600 on tune up and regular maintenance things when i got my car...shes been treating me right ever since....think of your new dsm as you would most girls, when they dont get what they want or "need", they start bitching!!

Yea.I was smacking down 1.8 swapped civic's with a k&n and mbc back in 2003 with my old auto 1g gst.My dsms have never been unreliable unless it was my own fault(wreck, blew the headgasket). Its like any used car it will need a little maintenance to be reliable for a long time.

that word is way too overrated. If you keep up on maintenance you will be fine.

You should look for any normal things you would when buying any car. When you test drive the car watch for any signs of smoke at start up and throughout the rpm range. Turbo cars are misleading sometimes, a little problem or sign can end up being a big one, and vice versa. You really are taking a chance buyin any car thats 10 years old, let alone a boosted one.
