Look at the video of the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting. Don’t look at the shooter. Look at the people in the background who are stunned, standing frozen while the shooter is firing. When they do move, they do not move with purpose and they do not head to real cover. Some lay on the floor out in the open. Others try to get behind a luggage cart.


This is action without thought; pretty much the very definition of panic behavior. This type of inaction will make you a sitting duck. And you know where the term “sitting duck” came from, right? It is a colloquial expression describing an easy target. That is something you don’t want to be.


So the point of this little mini-rant is that you should be looking for good cover everywhere at all times. Be looking for it before the shooting starts. That way, if you ever hear unexpected and loud popping sounds, you can immediately move in the direction of that cover. Don’t stand still for five seconds trying to figure out what is going on.


Always Be Thinking!
If you ever come face-to-face with this type of evil, you’ve got to be thinking on your feet. Better yet, be thinking on the move. Stationary targets are easier to hit. Get to cover, and then figure out your next move.

Good advice, but it applies to a ANY shooting incident, not just "active shooter" ones.
I saw a similar lack of reaction a few years back when a police chase ended in front of a grocery store just as I was coming out to my car. The sounds of approaching sirens and helicopters gave ample warning that something wasn't right, so there was no mistaking the sound of gunfire when one of the cops opened fire. You can imagine my surprise, after finding a comfortable place to squat behind the wheel of a parked car, to see a pair of other customers standing still in front of the doorway, not moving an inch.

After watching the video tonight and reading the comments below I am so glad I joined the USCCA, what a great organization to be a part of.
After viewing the video and reading the comments below you can see that the cowards attack the harmless sheep yet again. This guy won't charge a hill of machine gun fire to take the gun out to save his fellow soldiers , he shoots at unarmed people. What a coward. The old Hank Williams song comes to mind. Beachnut in his eye and a 45.
I recall the statement I first read that Tim said about defending his family and that fits me also and is the reason I joined the USCCA. I am responsible for my families safety. I carry concealed to do just that.
I am sick of the signs of handguns with a red circle around them here in NC. Has anyone else noticed that the cowards seem to look for that sign as a place to attack. We can't predict when an attack will happen but the where seems to be more and more a crowded public place where guns are not allowed. I am willing to bet the cowards consider these places as targets that have the banned handgun sign is top on their list.
I was thinking about the sign of a handgun with a green circle around it might be interesting. My shooting club has this sign and a comment under it says we are a gun friendly establishment and if the need arises to use self defense please use judicial aim to solution the problem. We don't promote violence but if you bring it we will react. They have a gun store, offer training classes, a shooting range, a convenience store and an outdoor archery range. FYI the store employees have never been attacked or robbed, please let that set in for a bit. We have people carrying both open and concealed and we have no trouble.
Along with Gunner below I see that if most of us are not trained and served in combat which is a good reason why most of us don't know what to do. If you have not served please get training. The USCCA offers great resources for this. You don't have a duty as our law enforcement offices have to be self deployed in a situation like this but you do have a responsibility and a right to defend yourselves.
Sheep and Sheepdogs, that is what it boils down to. All people need to know which of the two they are. I am a Sheepdog, I will defend myself and my family or someone that is being attacked. I choose not to be a Sheeple. I don't go looking for trouble but you have seriously messed up if you bring it to me.
If we can just get more folks to understand that we all have a right to survive. We have a right to defend our lives. We have a right to use a firearm if we are under imminent threat of loss of life, sexual assault or bodily harm. I agree to run for cover when you have too and don't have a firearm but people your have to learn defend yourselves. I am 58 years old and I TRAIN WEEKLY! Age does not hold you back. I pray we never have to use it. but be ready, not sorry.
Thank God for the USCCA that offers training in affordable forms.

One of the best speeches I've read is "Wolves, Sheep and Sheepdogs" by LTC Dave Grossman.(google it!) Wolves attack. Sheep stand helpless, in shock, hide or run. Sheepdogs defend the sheep, attack the wolf and run TOWARD the sound of gunfire, not away from it. I should add:In combat, warriors know, military tactics say the only way to survive an ambush is to assault through the ambush and attack! If you run from it you only get shot in the back. If you have a pistol and the ability to use it and do not carry it, you should hide and say "BAAAAH."

If you think about it the reason why people do not react in a tactical manner is because most of the people in this Country will never have to go through what these people did. I can remember a jumpiness just from being around people when I first got back from Nam. For most of us it went "mostly" away within a few months. Quite frankly, I am glad that the people of this Country do not know how to react and I truly hope none of them will ever experience anything like this. We have a wonderful life in the United States, outside of a few big cities people do not have to be afraid because they have never had anything like this happen.

Things are changing and we in the gun community are ahead of the curve. If you carry you must be on alert all of the time or why bother. I do have to say that the bed wetters who think it is a good idea to run at an armed man with a suit case have read too many books or visualize themselves doing things much differently in their mind, when the $hyt hits the fan only the very highly trained, combat vet's will react in an aggressive manner others can not even think to duck and cover.

This video was made possible by our own government, these people were put at risk by our own government. And if the rules are not changed right away there will be more to come and it will get more ugly as time goes on. The way we are treating our cops when they react to a hostile shooting we can expect many if not all of them to be less willing to run to the sound of the guns, why should they stick it out and get taken down for doing the right thing.

The same thing could be said for those who are armed, why should we put our life and liberty at risk for strangers when the lawyers and the courts can't wait to give your bank account an enema and stick you in with bubba who thinks you look very cute? I just renewed my USCCA insurance, I do not fear the bad guys, I've been in plenty of battles, I do fear the worse guys, the cops who show up late, the lawyers, judges and the system who truly wish to do me harm, a bad guy only wants my pocked money, the system wants everything, you will loose every gun you have, every round of ammo, every magazine and if you reload, you will loose all of that stuff also.

I ask you, who is the real enemy? Anyone who thinks that they have a say about how you are armed and how you defended yourself is your true enemy, these people are not interested in the law, they have an agenda and you are the one in the way! Every time I read the USCCA magazine and see the words about a person who defended them selves and at the end of the story is a statement about someone making up their mind if this person should be charged! If you do not know who is your true enemy or the truly bad guys you have not given the outcome of your actions much thought.

And if you must use your gun. When the police come. Just state your name & ask for a lawyer.
NEVER NEVER talk with the police with out a lawyer if you must use your gun.
You may talk yourself into bad news. Shut up until you have a lawyer with.

You’ve heard a lot about the fight or flight response. Well, I’m here to tell you that flight does not get enough coverage when it comes to self-defense options.
Yes, we talk about it when we discuss situational awareness and conflict avoidance, but we haven’t really had a good discussion of the elements of a sound tactical retreat.
True, the words “sound tactical retreat” sound much better than “running away.” But I must stress that avoiding a fight is not cowardice; it is just good thinking.
Here is the most important thing about an effective retreat: Only attempt a retreat if you are certain you can retreat safely.
I am not asking you to turn your back on a loaded gun and try to run away. That’s just foolhardy. What I am pointing out is that you should be looking for escape options at all times. Then, when things go bad, you should be working out in your head the chances of escape through one of locations you have already noticed. If the chances of escape are not nearly certain, you need to implement your fighting plan. Did you get that? You need both an escape option and a fighting option. Both of them are integral to your self-defense planning.
Some of you will tell me, “My state has a ‘Stand Your Ground’ law. I don’t have to go anywhere.”
Good luck putting all your eggs in that basket. First up, “Stand Your Ground” laws are not permission to start shooting without any legal aftermath. Each state has a different interpretation of what the law means and most also have very specific rules regarding how the law is interpreted and implemented. Two things I know for sure: If you stay and fight, you risk getting killed. And if you win the fight, there will be an investigation.
Getting killed is pretty clear-cut. You know what that means. But do you know what an investigation into a shooting is like? First up, get a lawyer and a pile of money. Then get ready to be questioned about every element of the incident. And if even one portion of your story changes during questioning, that element will be reopened and you will be subjected to more questioning.
Yep, you might be released without charges, but you still have to pay the lawyer and you can bet the questioning will be none too comfortable. Waiting for the official word from the DA will be no walk in the park either. Count on some stressful days and sleepless nights. I don’t care how tough you think you are; waiting for a DA to come back with a decision that could mean a trial is stressful.
The same thing is true with a shooting covered by the Castle Doctrine. Now I’m betting that no one wants to leave his or her house when an intruder comes in. But consider doing just that, or at least staying in a safe place with your family, because once you pull that trigger, your life changes. It matters very little if you are 100 percent in the right when you pull the trigger; the emotional trauma of the situation might just stick with you.
I can’t stress enough that fighting is the last resort, which means you should think about all the other options well before the fight begins.
I’d much rather hear about how you avoided a fight.
