    building an electric car

hello all, or none, this section seems pretty slow. i am interested in building an electric car. anyone around here done it? i actually was thinking about picking a super small car and using the whole rear end/motor out of a golf cart. i was thinking about actually using almost all of the golf carts parts and adding way more batteries. i know they sell over powered electric golf cart motors. any thoughts?

There is one guy who converted an S10 here. You'll find the thread if you search for it.

I think you'd have to start with a REALLY light car for a golf cart drivetrain to be acceptable. I mean, even a Geo Metro (among the lightest "modern" and readily available platforms) weighs a solid 1800 pounds. That's probably 2-3 times the weight of a golf cart. Typical electric golf cart can reach speeds of maybe... 30 mph? Now double the weight. You do the math.

Do some research. There's a LOT of info out there on doing electric car conversions.

thanks...yeah i saw the s-10 and read all of it. the car i am thinking about using ia a mg midget. 1500lbs stock...i figured i could get it down to 800 to 900 before conversion...a limo golf cart (on ethat seats 6 - 8 people) is close to 1000..without people....i havent found anyone who has tried to do it...but i keep looking..also the width of a mg is 51 in...a golf cart rear is 46in....both use leaf springs too...just thinking out loud at this point

Little British Cars are great for electric conversion. Light and very simple.

I think you'd probably have to do less fabrication to just fit an electric motor and adapter plate to the MG transmission (with or without the clutch). Either start with a basic kit from one of the major suppliers, or something like an old electric forklift. Unless, of course, you happen to already have an electric golf cart that you feel like hacking up.

I have been involved in a single electric LSV construction.. and a car built from scratch with 72 volts of big 6v led acid batteries it only weighed 1000 lbs but the range is abysmal. 30-50 miles at best.. it'll do 75mph if the limiter was removed... but at that speed it would deplete the batteries just after it reached the speed.
