Advice
Hey Guys, I am going to be getting my first car coming up here in May, and I wanted some suggestions on what to buy. I would appreciate if you guys would give some honest answers and maybe some past experiences with cars you've had. Oh right, and keep in mind I have a bout 3k to spend.

Is that what you call a get away? Tell me what you got away with, cuz I've seen more spine in jellyfish, I've seen more guts in 11-year old kids. So have another drink and drive yourself home, i hope theres ice on all the roads. So you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt and again when your head goes through the windshield" -Brand New

Ok he's got 3000 to spend. He'd be hard pressed to find a decent running car with a turbo. And if not the thing would have high miles and would need maintenance soon.
Get something reliable.
Nissan 240sx's and 280sx's are nice and reliable. Sporty.
I bought my first car fo 300 bucks. It was a cavalier and it lasted 5 years of hard driving. I still have my 2nd cavalier I bought 5 years ago.
If you want a nice car with decent miles I'd buy a cavalier. Reliable, low price, cheap insurance, cheap parts, easy to work on low insurance, look decent.

1st gen Mazda MX6 GT is turbo- 145hp, 190tq. I got mine for $1200, but that's a very good price for a car with few problems. Expect to spend about $2000 on a 5spd 1st gen GT.
Also available are the 626 GT from the same years (88-92) same power, almost the same car, except it's a 4 door (or 4door hatch). Or, there's always the Ford Probe GT from 89-92, same engine, very much the same car, just different look.
IF you do look into them, I'd be wary of the '89 with 4WS. Just for the sake of maintanance, 4WS is something to avoid. Not all '89's have it, but it's the only year they did the 4WS.
I love my '88 MX6 GT. Awesome little car. Probably should save the rest of the $$$ for minor repairs and maintenance, and insurance.
EDIT: Either MX6 or 626 (or Probe) should get about a 15.7 in 1/4 mile stock.Last edited by Illswyn; 02-23-2003 at 08:28 PM.

Hardpressed????
NOPE!
You can get a sweet 87-88 T-Bird Turbo Coupe for $3000!
Ups: Factory 190HP(5-speed),easily get to 350HP for less than $2000 more, 2.3T 4-banger, 35 MPG, STOCK bottom end will support 350HP with no mods to it, 8.8 posi rear, Some guy's with these cars are running 13's with about $3000-$4000 into it including the price of the car, factory ABS, factory ride control, factory 4 wheel disc brakes, all cars have tilt, cruise, power windows, power locks, power drivers seat, 5-speeds are T-5's, motors last forever(mine has 229,000 and has never been rebuilt!).
Might be able to find one for that price with cornering lights, dual power seats, auto dim, auto headlights & keyless entry.
Downs: The car is heavy(3400LBS)It's the orange one....

Interesting, because one of the better mods for the MX6 turbo is making a hybrid of the T-bird turbo.
As for 13's, probably equally possible with the MX6 for the same price. No ABS, but the rest of the luxuries are available for the most part.
And the MX6 and 626 get oscilating vents. Does your TBIRD get those? NO? DIDN'T THINK SO! (:
Last mx6 I had had 267,000 miles on the body. car was pulled from a junkyard and had a de-turboed probe engine put in. Dunno what the engine had on it, but the head gasket went, and I junked the car.

Nope, Don't have the oscillating vents...I have a friend that has a 626 with them and they are cool!
Can he get or find a MX6 or 626 turbo? If not, he would have to turbo it...
I know where he can get a nice semi low mile 87-88 Turbo Coupe already with a turbo for $3000 OR I can find him an 87-88 in nice shape with quite a few mods (200-300HP range)for $3000.It's the orange one....

Yes the MX6 and 626 turbos do come up occasionally. Like I've said before, I drove to Miami to get mine when I bought it on Ebay. Glad I did too.
Just look for a 88-92 MX6 GT or 626 GT. DON'T get the LX or DX, and try turboing it. It's more headache than it's worth. The GT transmission is much stronger than the n/a. I don't know what the limit is on it, but it's more than you'll be putting out without some crazy $$$ spent. Don't get an auto get a 5 speed of course.

If you look hard, you might get lucky. My friend just bought an old Celice All Trac Turbo for less than a grand. A minor tune up was all that was needed.
