How does Brembo justify their prices?
For my car... $3,295 for big brake kit. Please.

Or even better, RennTech brake kit for $4,295Last edited by Turbo C-Ya; 02-20-2003 at 06:30 PM.

Two reasons.
Mercedes + Brembo.
The brakes that come standard on my car used to be a $3,500 upgrade for the lesser porsches.
Half the reason why I bought my 930 is since it came with the upgraded suspension and brakes.
Switching to high end brakes on an european car will always set you back a pretty penny.
If I were you I would see if there is a factory upgrade brake set for your car that you can pick up used.Last edited by 0HP930; 02-20-2003 at 02:06 PM.

02-20-2003 03:30 PM #7Maybe I'll follow AMG's route and raid the Mercedes part bin for some SL500 brakes (like they did with the C36 and C43). Not as pretty but stops real nicely.Originally posted by 400HP930

What type of engine you got in the mercedes, blurbo diesel?
Or what, and are they fast?
-
02-20-2003 04:49 PM #11No diesel. It runs on petro. It is Mercedes' 2.2L engine (the car is a C220) with a Mosselman turbo kit. Is it fast? Not so much, only get around an estimated 235hp or so. Better than what it is w/o turbo. Its fun though. I was going to beef up internal and all to run high boost but law school is now my priority, no more modding.Originally posted by Bob22b

Maybe in two and a half years after I graduate, but I think I am secretly putting aside money to treat myeslf to a Mitsu Evo if I pass the bar exam.

To answear the original questions unless you're racing your car on a road course race track you're not going to see much of an improvment with a big brake kit at all. If your car is a street driven vehicle a big brake kit is going to do nothing but give you more bling. If you want to improve braking on a OE system consider stainless steel brake lines, a performance brake fluid flush and aggresive street pads(they may make noise, and they will dust like a mofo).

if you're trying to upgrade stock brakes without dropping a couple grand on brembos or wilwoods, and you get, say, steel lines and performance pads like AEM or green stuff, and you have to get new rotors anyway, what route is the best to go, OEM rotors or a good set of slotted or drilled ones? in general i hear its best to shy away from drilled ones, as they can crack at the drill holes or warp easier, unless thats a myth....Originally posted by lstepnio

Generally speaking drilled and slotted rotors are designed to help with pad gasing but you have to realize that modern pads don't have this problem. I'm not certain on how drilled/slotted effects cooling and I have seen this debated both ways but again unless you're racing(I'm not talking about autoX or drag racing) these heat issues should not be a concern. I would go with OE replacement rotors and be done with it. I would stay away from racing pads as they are not going to perform on the street along with terrible noise, terrible dusting and chewing up rotors really quickly. You want a nice set of street performance pads.
I have had really impressive results on my WRX with stainless steel lines, re-surfaced OE rotors, AXXIS Ultimate pads on the front and back(no brake noise but crazy amounts of dusting) and a full flush with synt brake fluid.
I read a comparison of some the big brake kits available for the WRX along with the OE system and the a upgraded OE system much like I described on my vehicle. The results are suprising to see the upgraded OE system to perform almost as good the expensive big brake kits in most of the tests.Last edited by lstepnio; 02-21-2003 at 02:26 PM.
