Announced today in Tampa: Red light cameras CAUSED more crashes and sometimes those crashes were fatal. When cameras were first installed, opponents had said the red light cameras would cause more crashes.

It was only a matter of time before the red light cameras were removed in Florida.

In the meantime, cities could and DID collect quite a bit of money until the cities were forced
to remove the red light cameras.

Months ago, it was announced that red light cameras were being de-activated
in Tampa and Hillsborough county. The lights still flash in several locations anyway as
psychological warfare to intimidate motorists who don't know if the cameras are really working.
"Why take the chance" is most often said.

When red light cameras were first installed in some Florida locations, red light cameras were
being removed in other parts of the US over being unconstitutional. Red light cameras were installed for free
and the selling company collected money from the traffic fines to pay for them. The company also supplied
testimony in court until a certain number of cases were won and cameras received "judicial recognition".
Judicial recognition means that the victims are not allowed to question or testify about the cameras.

In some lawsuits, the company selling the cameras was getting part of the money collected in fines. Most people agree that it is improper for a non-government entity to have been collecting money from traffic fines.

The red light camera sellers overcame that objection by changing the way they collected for the cameras.

While most unions fight hard to avoid work being taken from their members,
To gain police support, it was announced that "off duty police" would be looking at the films and mailing out tickets.
But NO ONE can tell you a police officer who actually worked for the red light camera company.

It also overcame the objection that the camera company was collecting money from fines, since they were now (on paper, at least), billing the city to cover the cost of paying off duty cops. Whether the camera company was actually paid by the city or was paid from fine money out of the general revenue account is STILL yet to be determined.

Temple Terrace....last unincorporated "city" in Florida was more honest than other cities. After collecting fines money for years and being asked if the cameras made a safety difference, Temple Terrace announced that it was "still under study" as Temple Terrace continued to collect money from fines.

Cameras go up based on traffic volume.
Have they realized that more cars mean more chance of a car not completely

They have only been there for what, a week or so, and I have personally seen a dozen near misses already.

I've seen people distracted by the flash you speak of, and it's true, people have almost wrecked because of it. I remember reading that they were removed in other states because people kept fighting it in court.

"supposed" to prevent. Not only that, but it has been well documented
that red light cameras cause crashes, yet the persuit of revenue takes

The cameras will stay until the right person files the right lawsuit.
They won't listen to you. The TV stations might. The city council might
listen, but you have to request in advance to get on the "list" to speak
for 5 minutes...and they will not answer any questions.
I have a camera in my car (for another reason) should I be the one who
witnesses it. And it will take the right incident to bring this to their attention.

"Right" meaning 1.someone will be killed or seriously injured.
2.The camera will have to have been present and did not prevent anything.

Unfortunately bureuacratic logic is:
"well now that we have a crash, we need to put up more red light cameras!"
....and they ignore the facts of the cause....and put cameras in the hot revenue spots... LOL -Bob

Eliminating all the legal if's, and's and but's here is K20AS's post. There is no mention of a yellow.
316.075 Traffic control signal devices.—
a. The driver of a vehicle which is stopped at a clearly marked stop line, in obedience to a steady red signal may make a right turn


From Graves link it is apparent that the yellow is a warning that you do not have enough time to go through the intersection. A judge will likely rule against you if you stop at the yellow then turn right and are in the intersection as the light changes to red.
(b) Steady yellow indication.—
1. Vehicular traffic facing a steady yellow signal is thereby warned that the related green movement is being terminated or that a red indication will be exhibited immediately thereafter when vehicular traffic shall not enter the intersection.
2. Pedestrians facing a steady yellow signal, unless otherwise directed by a pedestrian control signal as provided in s. 316.0755, are thereby advised that there is insufficient time to cross the roadway before a red indication is shown and no pedestrian shall start to cross the roadway.


In simplest terms, if the light turns red after you've entered the intersection, you are in violation regardless of if you are turning right or not.
