Technically it was at Ormond Beach instead of Daytona that land speed records were set.
At the Daytona Speedway museum, there once was either the original or a copy of Sir Malcolm Campbells "Bluebird". Here are some pictures
1933 Blue Bird V Boldride.com - Pictures, Wallpapers

The Campbell-Railton Blue Bird was Sir Malcolm Campbell's final land speed record car.
- Quick Specs -
His previous Campbell-Napier-Railton Blue Bird of 1931 was rebuilt significantly. The overall layout and the simple twin deep chassis rails remained, but little else. The bodywork remained similar, with the narrow body, the tombstone radiator grille and the semi-spatted wheels, but the mechanics were new.
Most significantly, a larger, heavier and considerably more powerful Rolls-Royce R V12 engine replaced the old Napier Lion, again with supercharger. This required two prominent "knuckles" atop the bodywork, to cover the V12 engine's camboxes.

First in the Trans Am class and third overall at the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona.
But the car was not what you think.

By Zach Doell

When is a Pontiac Firebird not actually a Firebird? Answer: when it’s really a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro. This pedigreed pony car, which competed in the SCCA’s Trans-Am series, started life as a ’68 Camaro and wound up a class winner at the 24 Hours of Daytona as a Pontiac – not your typical racing story.

You can make it yours when it goes up for sale at Russo and Steele’s Scottsdale auction in January. Jerry Titus – engineer, automotive journalist, and professionally-trained trumpet player – had made a name for himself in SCCA racing during the 1960s. He won both SCCA B and D-Production Championships in 1965 and ’66, respectively, driving for Carroll Shelby, and performed well in the Trans American Sedan series, also for Shelby, in ’66 and ’67.

But late in 1968, Titus departed Ford to form a new team, TG Racing, with backing from Pontiac, which would provide Firebirds, Titus would hold multiple roles as builder, mechanic, team manager, and driver. The Pontiac support didn’t come soon enough, though, and Titus needed a car to compete in the ’68 season’s final race. So he recruited Jon Ward, a former sprint car driver, and struck a deal to convert his self-prepared Camaro into the team’s first ‘Firebird.’
Engine failure spoiled what looked to be a race win, so Ward and Titus gave the Firebird one last go … at the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona no less. That February, somewhat astonishingly, the duo of Titus and Ward scythed through the competition to finish first in the Trans-Am class and finish third overall.

The ’69 Pontiac Firebirds arrived soon after, and this car was sold back to Ward. It eventually made the trip to Mexico and was campaigned successfully in the country’s Trans-Am series. In 1988, the historic Firebird/Camaro was rediscovered in Mexico, restored by Bill Elliot Racing, and now wears its race-winning ’69 Daytona livery.

1968 Pontiac Firebird Titus Trans-Am Race Car

Jerry Titus was not only a Championship winning driver but was also an engineer, journalist, auto magazine editor and even Julliard-trained trumpet player. Titus won the SCCA B-Production National Championship in 1965 driving for Carroll Shelby and the D-Production Championship in 1966. He competed in everything from Can Am to Indy cars and NASCAR. Jerry's aggressive driving style was best suited for the SCCA's Trans American Sedan series in which he drove, again for Shelby, to Championships in 1966 and 1967.
- Quick Specs -

#7L141852 - The First TG Racing Firebird - It was late in the 1968 Trans Am season, at Riverside, that Jerry Titus announced he would depart Ford to form a new team, TG Racing, supported by Trans-Am latecomer Pontiac. Pontiac agreed to provide cars for the following season and Jerry would serve as builder, chief mechanic, team manager and driver. The team set out to build a new Firebird for the last race of the season at Kent, Washington. Pressed for time, Jerry turned to young driver Jon Ward whom he had seen at Riverside. Ward, a former sprint car driver, had driven his self-prepared 'privateer' Camaro (Chassis #7L141852) to 4th place in his first Trans-Am race. A deal was struck to obtain the car with the intention of converting it to a Firebird. Completed just in time for the Washington race and with Jerry at the wheel, #7L141852, the first TG Racing 'Pontiac', set a new track record and qualified on pole. Titus led the race until engine failure caused him to retire on the 43rd lap.
In preparation for the 1969 season and still awaiting their new Firebirds, Titus decided to enter #7L141852 in one more race, the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona. The car was prepared in a red and white livery numbered 26. With Jon Ward as co-driver and a skeleton crew, the team went to Florida that February, prepared to compete not only with the Touring Car (Trans Am) class but also against an array of the world's finest purpose-built FIA endurance racecars including Ferrari, Porsche, Lola and the Ford GT40.
Qualifying a distant 16th, Titus and Ward alternately sliced through the field, reaching 2nd place. The team's fortunes were nearly dashed when the car's differential failed in the middle of the night. Titus and Ward made the necessary repairs and finally, after 24 punishing hours of racing, #7L141852 WON the Trans Am/Touring Class and finished THIRD OVERALL at Daytona!

With the arrival of the new '69 Pontiacs, #7L141852 was sold back to Jon Ward. It was eventually taken to Mexico and competed successfully in that country's own popular version of the Trans Am series. In 1988, the Firebird was discovered in Mexico. Jerry's son Rick Titus was able to authenticate the car and he subsequently acquired it and sent it to Bill Elliott Racing in Georgia for complete restoration. At Elliott's shop, the car was thoroughly reconditioned and race-prepared in its '69 Daytona livery, as it is presented today.

This car won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1990
By Nicole Wakelin

This 1988 Jaguar XJR-9 is the sole remaining example of just two racecars purpose-built to IMSA specs. Both of which achieved great success on the racing circuit in 1988, 1989, and 1990. Driver Martin Brundle actually spent some time behind the wheel of this incredible car and gave a walk around describing what it was like to drive it back in the day.

Here is a video interview from Amelia Island Florida:
http://news.boldride.com/2014/12/check-out-the-241mph-jaguar-xjr-9-racecar/65771/?utm_source=taboola&utm_medium=referral

Another Jaguar video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQErgDQaRZM

He notes that things are all analog, with more traditional readouts with dial and gauges. There were also big chunky switches that were easier to grab at night, especially with driving gloves on your hands. As the interviewer carefully squeezes into the seat, he points out that they only had about 20 seconds to get seated when they were in the middle of a race.

This Works Jaguar XJR-9, chassis 388 was driven by Davey Jones, Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace to a win at the 1990 24 Hours of Daytona. 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of this win, but it wasn’t the only notable win in the car’s history. It garnered four podium finishes in 1988 and never finished outside of the top seven during the season.
The following season it saw three front-row starts including a pole position, four second-row starts and eight overall podium finishes. The 1989 season had the Jaguar XJR-9 nabbing a podium finish in two-thirds of the races in which it competed. You’ll get your chance at owning this incredible piece of motorsports history when it goes up for auction through RM Auctions this coming March 2015.

Default Daytona Winner 1988 Jaguar XJR-9 Castrol Car

1988 Jaguar XJR-9 Castrol Car

This Works Jaguar XJR-9, chassis 388, which won the Daytona 24 hours in 1990. #388 is the third of just three cars constructed for the 1988 IMSA GT Championship, run by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), and the only remaining IMSA spec of just two XJR-9 chassis ever manufactured as purpose-built IMSA specification cars. - Quick Specs -

Prior to its most famous victory in 1990, #388 enjoyed two highly successful seasons in 1988 and 1989. In 1988, predominantly in the hands of Davey Jones and Jan Lammers, the car achieved four podium finishes and never finished a race outside of the top seven, a superb achievement that helped the Jaguar team secure third place in the IMSA constructor’s championship, stamping its authority in both IMSA and Group C racing.
During the 1989 season, #388 was an equally strong contender, achieving three front-row starts including a pole position, four second-row starts and eight overall podium finishes. The ‘89 season saw Price Cobb and John Nielsen join the car’s driver roster, leading it to a remarkable record that saw it finish on the podium for two-thirds of all the races it competed in.
By the start of 1990 season, #388 was fully developed into XJR-12 specification and went on to famously win the season’s headline event, the 24 hours of Daytona, in the hands of Davey Jones, Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace. The victory was an unquestionable high point in Jaguar’s illustrious endurance racing history, especially after having finished second overall with this car at Daytona in 1989. It also secured a podium finish at Sebring in 1990.
