Why do some trucks have 4 wheels in the back?

So why do some trucks have 4 wheels in the back? I've been looking to upgrade my truck to a full size one. I've been keeping my eye on the 02-08 Ram 1500 and Ram 2500 trucks. My main reason for the upgrade is to have more cab space. I also want something strong enough to tow Go carts, 4 wheelers, and hopefully a Travel Trailer one day. Several buddies from work said there really is no difference between a 1500 and a 2500. The only difference is the suspension. They said a 2500 just has a heavier duty suspension than a 1500. I've seen some 2500HD trucks (heavy duty??) which seem to look like it has a bigger engine, bigger Rear end and some of the trucks(chevy) i've looked at have a hitch in the middle of the bed which I think it means they can pull a huge Travel trailer. Ones which require a 5th wheel??? Don't really know what that means. Most of the Trucks on the road that I see 1500 or 2500 are pulling a big/huge travel trailer, horse trailers, etc.. etc.. without any problems that I can tell. So what is the main use of a truck with 4 wheels on the back? Is it just for better traction because it has 4 wheels in the back and/or so it can distribute the weight better while it is hauling stuff or is it for something else and people just buy the truck for the hell of it? I rarely ever see a dully doing any major pulling on the road. When I do see it pulling something it's either a Travel trailer, horse trailers, go carts, golf carts, 4 wheelers, etc.. etc.. The same crap a 1500 or a 2500 pulls.

I'm no truck guy but I'd assume its for distribution of weight, for stability purposes, traction, when pulling/hauling heavier loads. I'd assume trucks with 4 wheels in the back can haul/tow more than normal pickups.
Edit: I also didnt read what you wrote so if you've proven my view wrong dont bother reading my post.

"4 wheels in the back" are dualies how ever you want to spell it. The entire rear axle is stronger and it does distribute weight better and provides better traction and braking (braking is one thing most people neglect). From what you posted a SRW (single rear wheel) will fit you perfect and save you money on initial cost, maintenance, etc.
Not sure on dodges, but a ford f250 and f350 that are SRW are the exact same trucks just a 350 has a block in the rear to make it higher. I'm talking identical from spring rates and all.Good thing to know to save money. Might want to google differences in dodge 1500 and 2500.
PS: Dodge sucks dick.

Ford>Dodge>Chevy when it comes to diesel trucks. The cummins is a good motor but the transmissions are known to fail from time to time. We have 4 of them at my work that pull 40ft+ boats daily with no issues though.
BTW you don't need a dually... a F250 or Ram 2500 will do more than you need-VINYL WRAPPING-

Added tires is for more stability when towing, nothing like towing a heavy trailer and turning and your trailer pushes your rear tires sliding out making your truck drift. I used to sell diesel trucks and have sold duallies.
You have a choice in hitches you can either do 5th wheel (most common) or goose neck (for serious towing, construction equiptment etc) When buying a used truck you preferebly want one without either hitch.
Ram 2500 (single axle) or in your case 3500 (dually version)
Towing anything you will want a diesel engine. You have to becareful and know what to buy or you will end up with a money pit. Diesel trucks are expensive to repair and cost more to fix then gas. But the savings you get is worth it! Plus there bad ass!
Heres trucks to look for 2003-2007.5 Ram cummins 5.9L, if you find a manual even better. 1999-2003 Ford f250, f350 7.3L those are also great trucks. But the rams do get slighty better mpg, and cummins lasts longer. But imo Ford's look better
When buying a diesel trucks ALWAYS buy a 4x4, they are in demand, when it comes time to sell it, it will sell quickly. 2wd diesel trucks are very hard to sell. They are a lot cheaper too! Having leather helps resale also!

Hey OP why not buy yourself a Diesel van? I mean like one of those Sprinters? If they arent your cup of tea why not an Ford E series? I'd rather have a van than a truck, they seem more practical to me. If you want to tow/haul just take the seats out and use it, if you're taking a family vacation put the seats in and bam driving comfortably like a MOFO. I mean sure they dont haul as much as trucks, but what you have posted doesnt seem very heavy.
I say you get yourself a van. If you ever decide to sell ice creams you got a business vehicle and same goes for getting back to your past as a pedophile. Just think of endless possibilities.

Nope. For the price it isn't a bad deal.
I've looked at all three. Ford, Dodge, and GM. For the price and the milage on the vehicles Dodge seems to be the best fit. 02-06 Dodge quad cab with around 75 -120k miles for 8k plus or minus a grand vs a Ford or GM 02 quad cab with 160k - 200k going for the same price sometimes more expensive.
Just about everyone at my job either has a Dodge or GM/Chevy. Both have good and bad to say about the trucks. I myself drive a GMC Sonoma with the heavy duty package. I can't complain about the truck. It's a work horse.PS: Dodge sucks dick.
I don't want a dually. I was just curious. I want a regular gas V8
No Google is not broken. I've done all my research on the Trucks, but remember this is a Automotive Forum. Well the last time I checked it was. Is it? What's the point in having a forum if everyone just wants you to google everything and not ask questions. How do you expect this forum to grow if all you offer the members or future members is " google or wiki " ??
You still mad I fucked your sister?for getting back to your past as a pedophile. Just think of endless possibilities.

I have an 05 Dodge.. 06+ has displacement on demand I think.. I like my 05 best, it doesn't have the cadillac tail lights, doesn't have the stupid headlights that take up half the fender, and it runs like a champ.
My dad has had 3 dodges, and sold 2 of them, running with over 250,000 miles. his current 1996 has 220k with not a drop of oil on it.
get a hemi. not the 4.7 v8, and don't use the grab handles on the A Pillar, they pull off easily. research that.

Never been a fan of Dodges truck transmissions. Hell they made me killer money for the years I worked for Ford. Companies would trade them in as soon as the warranty went you because they were constantly in the shop for tranny issues. Don't know if that has changed at all.
