Congratulations to Scholarship Winner Mateusz Malinowski & Simon Restrepo -

For those of you who don't know, The USF Society of Automotive Engineers competes in Formula SAE and Formula Baja against other schools. They engineer, design and build cars from scratch using precise measurements.

Q Motorsports offers scholarships to people involved in motorsports.
It was my pleasure to have known TR member Blue2KSS during the time he was President of USF-SAE from 2006 to 2009. He now works as a Mechanical Engineer for the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

The USF Society of Engineers race team plans to compete in 2012 at Detroit Michigan, Canada and hopefully Lincoln Nebraska. For more information go to www.usfracing.com

I hope Tampa Racing members will join me in congratulating Mateusz Malinowski on earning this prestigeous scholarship.
    His application reads in part:

I am Mateusz Malinowski and I am currently a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of South Florida with an interest in motorsports engineering. I am devoted to my education and determined to achieve my goal as a designer of race cars. These qualities set me apart from the rest of the crowd applying for the Q Motorsports Scholarship. I am currently Vice President of the local chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers at USF and also responsible for the design of the brake system for the 2012 Formula SAE race car built annually by the SAE chapter at USF. After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school and work on a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. My dream is to work as a design engineer for a race car manufacturer in Europe.

Mateusz Malinowski is Vice President of the local chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers at USF .-Bob

    his application reads in part:

My name is Simon Restrepo. I'm studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Florida. I started at USF in the Fall of 2007 and at the same time I became a member of the USF Racing (Society Of Automotive Engineers student chapter at USF-SAE). I'm graduating with a Bachelors Degree in May 2013. My career goal is to enter the motorsports industry either working for a race team, race engineering consulting firm or motorsports parts supplier. I also plan to get a Master's degree in Engineering Management or a Master's degree in Business Administration. The Q Scholarship is helping me get closer to my goals.

Simon is currently the President of the USF Society of Automotive Engineers.-Bob

    Empire,
I have read some of your postings. You will love their shop.
They also have a fully equiped race bus to transport the team and vehicles.
If you need a letter of recommendation sometime, we should get together and talk.
But not in front of people who might be reading this thread.-Bob

this is actually one of the things that is keeping me excited about going back to school.
I got a long way to go before even getting to USF. I wasn't exactly a "good" high school student, so my existing GPA blows. So I'm over at HCC working on getting my GPA up and then going to transfer to USF.
I like how you don't necessarily have to be an engineering student to be part of this. I keep changing my mind on what direction I want to go in. Mechanical engineering. Businesses. electrical engineering. Keeps flipping around. If I did everything I want to do, I'd be in school for the next 2 decades. lol

    Empire,
You talk about how you don't necessarily need a certain degree......
I know someone who worked in NC for a race team, had a top secret clearance and worked
developing race car suspensions. He was working to get a business degree.

His reasoning was that if he knew something about business and public relations, that he would
be able to get sponsorship easier. He had run his own small racing team before moving to NC,
and when the school learned about that, they asked him to write a book on race team management
to be used in their curriculum.

A person never loses by educating themselves, even if it takes some time.-Bob

My friend and former co-driver Keith was part of that program at his school here in Melbourne, they built a car, brought it out to an autox to do a test-n-tune, and now he works for Nissan.

I watched the Formula SAE group race up at Lincoln this past year - they were in our run group - they were fast and really dedicated.

Good luck to these guys at USF.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

    Chi Town,
I love a success story. Thanks for posting. Sometimes when someone reads something inspiring,
it changes the course of their life. there will be people reading this and who knows?
They might see something they can do and actually like it.
Some people say that if you like what you do that you will never work a day in your life.

    By contrast,
Some people hate what they do but it gives them enough money to go have a good time
on the weekends.......and then they have to do it all over again on Monday.

In NC, stock car racing is an industry. There are racing schools where they actually teach
you how to build a car from the ground up. Frame, sheet metal, wiring, plumbing, painting.....
Then they teach you how to make the car stick to the road. there is a heck of a lot more to
racing than turning left. (or in my case right and left) there are so many combinations of
adjustments to make a car stick to the road that most people's minds can't wade through it.
Most minds cannot handle the math involved. With race management there is a lot of
behind the scenes stuff.............and spectators never know about it...... LOL

The schools compete against each other. The schools also do job placement. So a person learns
something that they like and get their foot in the door. When I tech inspected Legends Cars,
I have a picture of Joey Logano at the track in Bradenton before anyone knew who he was.
Now he makes a pile of money in Nextel cup.

that would be me if I went electrical. it is a pretty high demand field, and the pay is good, and only getting better. I just don't naturally enjoy it the way I enjoy other stuff. I find the mechanical side of it to be much more gratifying.

    Empire,
    I understand what you say.
I know some people who work a semi-related job to give them the income to
enjoy the REAL stuff they like to do.

I'm blessed with doing what I like....working on cars....for an income,
so I can do what I like .........working on cars. LOL and going to meets....
where the attendees TALK about ..........(gasp) ....working on cars! -Bob

I also identify with what you say about electrical work for money
    and mechanical work for enjoyment.
