Tires too tall
While on the way to a meet, I noticed the car in front of me was smoking
and I could smell burning rubber. Normally if there is smoke, it will smell like
electrical wire insulation burning, or it will smell like oil burning.
He parked his car and I walked over. Smoke was still coming from the
left rear wheel well. I bent down and looked at the tire/suspension. The
inner-most rib of the tire was slick looking.
He said he just got the rims and tires that day and had mounted them
on the car himself.
If you've read the articles I have written on suspensions, you know that
I spend some time carefully measuring things. What was happening was
the tire/rim combination was too tall. He had put on taller rims and tires
to get "the look" of a filled up fender opening.
Where the platform is that the coil spring sits on, sometimes called the
spring perch, the tall tire/rim combination was rubbing on the bottom edge
of the coil spring platform/perch.
The purpose of this post is to caution people to check your clearances
carefully when you change rim or tire sizes. If the tire or rim is "close" to anything,
the tire will sometimes flex a little and anything that is close to the tire will rub.
You have heard me say it at the meets......lower your car first then choose
your wheels and tires. If you pick the wheels/tires first, sometimes the
suspension cannot be properly lowered without the tires rubbing. In his
case, it will cost him some money to get replacement wheels and
tires that have enough clearance.-Bob---- on-site *Aftermarket* spring/suspension installations --- on-site impact wrenching---street lowering with your own stock springs...........

Maybe you can make the tires smaller without actually removing them.
EDIT: wait hold on, At first I thought this was an "I cut my springs like an idiot" moment, but nowhere in the thread do I see that his car was lowered.
My question is this....
Bob, did this guy take off stock wheels, just to replace with a larger wheel and tire combo that didnt fit?Last edited by markstheman365; 12-21-2011 at 03:10 PM.

I stopped a guy driving up 39 in plant city last night. his lifted F150 left rear brake drum was glowing red and shooting sparks. nobody got near him but i pulled up next to him and got his attention. he thanked me when he looked in the mirror at the smoke trail behind his truck.
I think he left his parking brake on.

Mark,
If you "Still don't know why this needed to be published for millions to read." ,
When it's you in front of me next time, I will not inconvenience you by letting you know. LOL
1BAD,
You did right. If it happened to you, you might want to know.
If you know a solution, sometimes you can pass it on. That is far better than
a person who yells "Hey! MF! Your truck's on fire, you DA CS !"

He said that a long time ago, Mark, or you could ask him why. LOL -Bob---- on-site *Aftermarket* spring/suspension installations --- on-site impact wrenching---street lowering with your own stock springs...........

Does my added words make this comparison any clearer?-Bob---- on-site *Aftermarket* spring/suspension installations --- on-site impact wrenching---street lowering with your own stock springs...........

Trolls trolling trolls while getting trolled trololololol
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

Maybe instead of heating up the springs to street lower it you can jack up the car, torch them until they stretch a few inches and BAAMM you have a street ricer lift and they won't rub anymore... Just a thought.
