Got a Series II. Great tough motor, I've got 174k on one and its still running pretty good. Just had to replace the upper/lower intake manifold gaskets, but thats the only big thing I've had to do.

If I ever built a GM product, it would be a 383 stroker, or a 3800 with a little bit of forced induction behind it.

Currently own both a series II 3800 (NA) and a 3400 V6 (different engine family, 60 degree block). Having worked on both, I'd say I like the 3400 design a lot more. The 3800 is ancient and has a lot of similarities to the 4300 V6 and old 350 V8's. It's tough and will last a long time, but not very efficient so not great power or fuel mileage in stock form. When you put it transverse in the engine bay for fwd it makes reaching anything in the back a major pain. Plus it still has a stamped steel oil pan and iron heads. There is a decent aftermarket for them though, although nothing like V8's or imports have, and people have put down some respectable numbers with them.

I have a 3.8 Regal GS N/A and I love my beater car. It sure does surprise alot of people at stoplights. I got the car for $300 a year ago and only had to change a few coilpacks and basic tuneup after putting 30k miles on her.

im a series III owner. They are pretty awesome motors and easy to work on. Quite a few ppl that ride or drive in my car are a little suprised by the power it makes and how it feels. I wish they had spent a little more time and really updated it. It woulda been a great motor if they coulda gotten 240-250hp outta them n/a.And the 3.4.s did suck. almost all of them had to thave the intake gaskets replaced. the dummy plug for the distributor leaked after old age and it was a bitch to change. The 3.4 DOHC was a peppy motor but it was nothing more than a 3.4 OHV with OHC heads on it and it was modified to run it.
