I would beg to differ. The L36 3800 only made 195hp and 230 ft/lbs with an extra .4L displacement, versus 175hp and 205 ft/lbs from the LA1 3400. The 3400 has aluminum heads with a much better design and are more detonation resistant. They have a cast aluminum pan that is cross bolted to the main caps acting as an integral crank girdle. Not to mention the 60 degree angle between the cylinder banks makes them evenly balanced on firing forces through the crank rotation so they have better crank harmonics and are a smoother engine than the 3800. Basically the 3800 is a boat anchor compared to the 3400, which is an outdated design itself. Only real issue the 3400 had was LIM gasket leaks, which can be solved with new fel-pro gaskets.

If I need any more proof, the L67 in the GTP made 240hp at 8psi of boost with an Eaton M90 blower. My 3400 is make 320hp at the wheels at 9.5psi, with a little Eaton M62, on a stock block with only a cam and headers.

So where are they today? How many best engine awards did they win? How many are turning 150-200k+ and still running? I see 3.8s doing it all day long. From power standpoint, neither motor is worth a shit. Your 320whp car is slow. The GTP is slow. The souped up 3.8s that people have are slow. Its all slow. Man up and get a V8. I'm talking from reliability.

And really, a pan acting as a girdle? Have you ever SEEN a girdle?

    huh what?

Ive driven lots of 3.8s and 3.1 and 3.4s. The 3.4 doesnt hold a candle to the overall power feel the 3.8 has. Hell ive raced and raced againist a few the 3.8 is leap years quicker over a 3.4. You can qoute peak numbers all you want, but its the total curve that makes the different. The only fast 3.4 was the DOHC but that thing was a nitemare.

Hows this for power under the curve?
