they are directional like ^ said, but also, more to the point, a cluster of LEDs can be much brighter than a single bulb.
However, a single LED isn't as bright as a single bulb.
Check out the superbrightled.com site. They talk about how one LED isn't as bright.
The thing with LEDs is that they draw far less voltage, which allows you to use multiple LEDs in the place of a single bulb and the more LEDs you use, the more light you will put off.
Basically, a LED puts out more light per volt/watt whatever, then a normal bulb.
Think of it like this. we'll just make up some numbers just for the sake of argument. I have no idea what the actual numbers are, but the point is still the same.
Say a normal bulb puts out 10 lumens per volt but a LED puts out 15 lumens per volt. A single conventional bulbs takes 12 volts, so 12 volts times 10 lumens is 120 lumens. Thats for one single bulb.
Now, for one single LED, it only pulls 2 volts. 2 times 15 is only 30. So the single bulb puts out more light than the single LED.
But if we were able to put together a cluster of LEDs, lets say 6 LEDs. That's 2 volts a piece, so now we are up to the same 12 volt draw as the conventional bulb. 12 times 15 is 180.
So now that cluster of LEDs is putting out one and a half times the amount of light as the conventional bulb using the same amount of power.

So one for one, the conventional bulb may be a better option. It is the low power draw of LEDs that allow you to cluster several together and that is what gives you more light.
