Something reliable and slow. And inexpensive.
I drove a 1993 Honda Civic EX. Great little car. Until I destroyed it.

well i started with a 2m4 fiero which is kind of similar, from a usage stand point it wasn't bad, not exactly practical but i enjoyed it. though idk how safe they are lol.

What kinda of price target are you aiming for? and are you will to put some work into the vehicle to get it into shape? There are a lot of great old cars out there and the MR2 is just one of them. I always kinda liked the Celica GT-4. Pretty limited production on this specific model but most people who have them aren't aware of what they have. Was one of the only models of celica that came with stock awd. Other ideas might include an older prelude, civic, mirage ls, maxima, RX-7, Corolla, or my all time favorite "wtf is that?" classic japanese import....the mitsubishi starion. I'm sure there are plenty others out there...but those will give you some ideas. If you're looking to feel some moderate pull throughout the gears you can strike the civic, mirage, and corolla from that list. However...the starion was a sort of precursor to the dsm and should offer comparable performance to a prelude si, rx-7, celica, or mr2.

I love em lol...they just got a bad rap because of what they were and when...turbo charging was new to mass production vehicles and most people dogged the hell out of them...besides...arent you the guy who was just talking about a pontiac fiero? those cars were infamous for blowing head gaskets, warping cylinder heads, and popping radiators and hoses. The starion will treat you good if you treat it right.

Depends on what you want out of your first car. Do you want something realiable that is fixed with parts readily available at pretty much any local shop/store? Or would you sacrifice reliability and money towards bus fare (while you are waiting on parts) with something a little more rare with parts that are somewhat difficult to find or possibly expensive to repair?
I think a later model Foxbody Mustang is a great first time car. Parts are usually really easy to find and they are pretty rock solid cars if they are/were taken care of. Plus they are fun, cheap, easy to work on, and have tons of aftermarket support.Last edited by Alan; 12-23-2010 at 01:21 PM.

Well, that's more than I initially assumed you'd have to spend on a first car...if you went with one of my original suggestions you could have a little work done on the engine as most of those cars can be found for 2-3 grand, 3-4 grand worth of bolt ons make quite a difference. However if you're not looking to tune right away. I'd say look for something in the mid to late 90's. A car is an extension of yourself...it's one of those things that no one can really tell you which car speaks for your personality...if the way one car looks appeals to you more than the others...that's probably the way you should go. Here's a pic of the Celica GT-4 anyways. And one of the starion.
