Im in school right now and just finished mycomputer class exam (sorry about errors keyboard is broken).....Iwas wondering...Ive heard many bad things about the reliability ofthe rotaryengine in an rx-7.....are these true? I might belookin toget one but am still unsure.....i would prob.upgrade to a single turbo and fmic of course along with the requirements which i would havegiven to me by a respectable shop(more than likely Pettit Racing)......so j/w if any of you guys know anything about the temperments and reliability of the rotary engines!thanks!!

for the turbo variants yes they only get around 80-100k before needing a rebuild.
They dont need that much maintenence they are like any typical sports car. Its definatly an exotic sports car it doesnt try in any way to be a super daily driver.
As a weekend car they are incredibleAdvocate for the People's Republic of Awesome

Rotaries can be decently reliable they just have slightly different maintainence than regular piston cars. I know someone with one at UF who was explaining to me some of the things he has to do regularly to the car. One thing he has to do is actually put a certain amount of oil in the gas tank to keep the apex seals on the rotors from wearing out prematurely sort of like a 2-stroke I guess

they already have an oil metering pump which adds oil into the combusiton chamber.
runnign pre mix is what some guys do anywyas howeverAdvocate for the People's Republic of Awesome

theyre reliable as long as you take care of them. they do require more upkeeping than most cars however. they tend to overheat because the cooling system isnt that great and the IC is susceptible to heatsoak. always have to check coolant and oil levels very often.

Rotary is very simple. you need to rebuit the motor at 80k mile.
If run lean or too rich the motor will break. also rotary gets really hot.1998 J-Spec Z28 convertible (daily driver)

I heard the worst part about the rotaries is finding head gaskets for them.

i had an '84 RX-7. The damn car was fun to drive, but damn it was a very unreliable. It burned more oil than gas, always something wrong with it. It went through two engines. The first one was overlapped for the extra torque, I still can't believe I broke a rotor!!!!!?????!!!!!!

ive been looking the maintenance on these cars up. seems like they will be reliable as long as you are up to date on all of the maintenance and monitor everything (engine temp especially). cool car if it would be reliable. i def. noticed that there are an awful lot of them on ebay for sale that dont have original motors. anyone on here own one?

i was looking at getting one before I got my current car. If you get one that the previous owner did not take care of properly, expect a lot of probs. They are beautiful cars, and will run like the devil if taken care of. They are not for the average person though, you need to know about cars, so that you can avoid issues like overheating.
