If you're only considering a Miata and Passat you haven't done enough research.
One and only rebel child,
From a family, meek and mild:
My Mama seemed to know what lay in store.
Despite all my Sunday learning,
Towards the bad, I kept on turning.
'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore.
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.
That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

2 reasons
1. The miata is a good car and has a good engine to work on.
2. VW's are close to home because my family has worked for them in the past before i moved to america.
Also the miata is Cheap and i don't want a civic
RWD , cheap, semi reliable = FTW

as much as i like the looks and fit and finish of VWs, their history of having electrical gremlins would not allow me to suggest such a car. but if you're aware of the faults the car possesses and are willing to live with those, knock yourself out.
also, mistake #1 - telling everyone you have a vagina. how many PMs have you gotten so far from guys wanting to help you work on your new car?

as far as i know the engine is pretty much bullet proof ( no boost or pun intended). Just reg. maint. and it's go time. but as far as price how much do people pay for a 89 civic with a b16 ? some pay 2-3 grand for the same price you can have a decent looking miata. I found one for 4000 ORIGINAL motor only 69k miles and no dents or rice on it. find me a honda for that price. Point is that for a fun car one could not go wrong if they know basic maint. stuff. i will probably pick one up. i have to wait one more week until the word comes through. and did i mention it's RWD. cheapest rwd car i could find ( besides Rx7) but i don't F with rotary engines. don't know shit about them so 4 banger it is

it depends on what youre looking for. if you want a smooth driving car with creature comforts then go for the passat, if you want something kinda sporty, that has no utility and is pretty much only for fun and commuting then go for the miata. if i lived in florida and those were my only two choices (even though im a vw guy) id go for the miata.
