like said before, passat for if you need room for friends to ride, and like expensive car parts and sythectic oil changes, miata if you want an all around fun car to drive, handling, convertible, cheap and easy to fix and repair if anything even does happen, oh and F&S lol

Mom had a 98 Passat. I miss it, honestly. VW's flagship for decades, well built tank..only problems with it was the turbo that heated up the oil lines and killed itself (all 98s and some 99s..there was a recall), it was tiptronic instead of manual, and of course, FWD. Still, longitudinal engine that makes easy power, the best looking of the B5s (98/99) had the better tails and still were drive by cable. One day Id like to buy a wagon like it. I dont think it'll be easy to find a white variant 1.8T 5 speed though.

Also depends on your goals. Entirely different cars there.

Nah. VW has some beautiful cars, most years of the Golf, the older style beetle, type 3, etc.

This is one of the less sporty ones (ok the type 3 isn't sporty, but its cool as fuck LOL), and something about it doesn't appeal to me.
