the smallest Diesel engine in a BMW here is a 2 liter diesel in the 118d or 318d.

there's also a stronger 2 liter Diesel for the x20d cars.

The biggest diesel will be the brand new 3 liter twin turbo with 305 bhp, not for sale yet, the strongest diesel was a 3 liter single turbo before the TT was announced.

you can have Diesel engines in the MINI, 1series, 3series, 5 series, 7series, X5, X6.

only the Z4 stays Diesel free.

big plus, BMW Diesels dont sound so "John Deer"-ish like the VW Diesels.

bad thing is, you have to pay higher taxes for the benefit of having great torque and great gas mileage.

of course every other manufacturer selling family cars in Europe got Diesel engines in their program.

even Porsche with the new Cayenne Diesel, what I think is blasphemy.

about that Porsche Roadster, here's something about it

This is a stick up, don't make it murder.

well maybe not exactly 98%, but theres no doubt there are ALOT of diesel powered Volkswagen on the street. (talking about the newer models)

the only petrol Volkswagen I see are some Golf GTI, a very small number of TFSI powered Golfs and maybe a R32 every 3 months......compared to this I see tons of diesel Golfs, Passats, Polos, Eos and whatnot every day.

markzeronine seems to know what I mean

Diesel fuel is less expensive than normal petrol, this + the great mileage makes them perfect for people with family or for people that travel alot.

they even compete with TDI engines at the 24h race at the Ring.......I'm not a big fan though, they smell, they sound bad, weird power expansion, usualy lower top speeds

I guess that most people still think that Diesel = old truck diesel engines

    the old engines were terrible!!

I drove a VW T4 van when I was in the military, it had a 5 cylinder, 2.4 liter Diesel engine without turbo.

I've got overtaken by buses and trucks on the Autobahn!

the newer engines barely emit smoke in the air because of the filter systems, new injection systems und the use of 1-2 turbos make them more powerful.

the worst part about a diesel is, that they only rev up to 4000-45000 rev/min, they produce full torque from the beginning, but lose it the more you build up the revs.

thats why I dont like them, because you have to drive them different to a petrol car.

but that also makes them pretty quick from a dig, I realy have to work the shit out of my car to keep up with the 2.7 and 3 liter Audi diesels (I have a higher top speed though)

because of the turbo and the knowledge alot of tuners here know how to chip the ECUs, companys like Hartge, Abt etc offer ECU tunes for diesel engines.

Alpina (the manufacturer who uses BMW models) even has a diesel car in their program, the D3

IIRC, VW took away some turbo diesel models because our diesel is DISGUSTING compared to the diesel in Europe

WAS disgusting. Before 2007, it had a much higher sulfer content. As of 2007, all of our diesel is "ULSD," ultra low sulfur diesel, which is now cleaner than their diesel. I think their standard is 10 or 25 ppm of sulfur, ours is 5 now down from 50.

Because of the new fuel, VW pulled their USDM diesels and made a new engine for the new fuel.

This is precisely why diesel is not big here. Also, we're spoiled rotten with our gas engines.

Yeah, chips do amazing things to diesels here too. Our big trucks can get 100 HP, 200 ft lbs from a chip.

Actually 90% of the new Jetta wagons that were sold were TDI. Here in America. Diesel sales over yonder are literally 50% or greater.

The Jetta TDI puts out 236 ft lbs with the new 2.0..I have no doubts that a TDI "sportster" would have 260 ft lbs or more; even better, the power they'll make after a chip and full exhaust.

We havent gotten any, if ever, in quite a while until recently. You can now get a 335d or an X3 with the same engine, the 3.0 TTD that was mentioned.

We're going to start getting 4 bangers from them again, so its possible we'll get the 123d version of the 2.0 TTD. Yes, 4 banger with two turbos from the factory

Taxes are less over here actually for diesels
