Delayed Shifting
I'm doing the speed limit on U.S. 19, and some large truck quickly comes up behind me so I gun it... my automatic car in 4th gear takes a few seconds along with a short tea party before deciding to downshift and speed up rather then just bog down in 4th gear. Is this normal? I mean, it really takes multiple seconds for the car to go from bogging to accelerating with my foot on the floor. I fear that this is typical of automatics but I don't know what I should do. Sometimes that immediate acceleration is necessary to stay safe (in this case the truck just blew around me, nothing unusual, but there's always next time). Let me know if this is typical or if I probably need to get it checked out. Thanks.

All my auto trans experience is with GM (Allison in particular) transmissions, but the basics are still the same...and to answer your question, no, it should not take that long. Im going to assume that yours is electronically controlled, so the trans shoud be fairly quick to react to input. As far as diagnosing the actual problem....there are far too many things it could be. Your best bet is to take it to a decent tranny shop.

Drama and death, you unhelpful turds,

And BTW, my car was chosen for me... I won it last year at graduation night at my high school. I guess I was that "unlucky kid"
I should have just said no, or sold it and bought something better
Prowlin Pacso, Thanks. I'll get it checked out.
I think my moms GMC (2006? Canyon) does a little bit of the same thing but it's not as bad as on my car.
I've read in the manual that if you want it to instantly downshift, you can let off the petal and quickly jam it again. I guess I'll have to test this some time when it's safe. I understand though that this still shouldn't be required.

its not to late to sell it for another car... free money, since you didnt buy it that is.. and tell your parents they never bought you a car so they owe you one.

The problem is that it is an automatic. I have never driven an automatic that shifted when I wanted it to. They all suck.
