cai or sri
what are your opinions?

my opinion is this thread sucks
my opinion on the intakes, if you want performance, get an intake tube as far away from the engine as possible and shield the tube and filter from any heat, if you want a loud sound, get a short intake and don't worry about heat shrouding, it isn't helping you anyway

I would go with a short ram....less chance of sucking up water....I know to many people that have gotten there engines blown from sucking up water with a cold air, unless you are going to get the hydroshield or some kind shield for it.

short ram doesnt suck up water but you wont get as much HP as a cold air.... you could get a cold air with a bypass valve or when you know its gonna flood you take it out....short ram in FL=heatsoak X 9000

the difference between the two powerwise is pretty insiginificant
but one can suck up water
choose that one

I have an AEM CAI and I have driven through small oceans of puddles and I have never sucked any water. I do not have any shielding at all, I barely have fender splash guards anymore (I don't bother with heat shielding because my IM is so heatsoked you can cook eggs on the thing). My car is fine in the rain, and its fine in puddles. I have never even heard of anyone daily driving with a CAI and hydrolocking. The ONLY WAY you will ever get water in the intake is if the filter is COMPLETELY immersed in water, and at that point, you deserve hydrolocking anyway.
Like Jlude said, If you heat wrap it, a CAI will yield several more HP than a short ram, plus you get the lovely intake harmonics.Last edited by omgwtfbbq!; 05-20-2008 at 12:29 PM.

It is pretty common to hydrolock with a CAI. I've seen it done more than once. Especially in the summer in FL where it pores in short bursts and puddles are sometime unavoidable.
Get a SRI. It's not worth the risk for the non existant power advantages.
By the way SRI can actually yield more power in certain cases. Here is a good article where they tested a bone stock 99 Civic Si with a bunch of different CAI's and SRI's. You can view the dyno sheet for each one or view the overall results in the chart.

I used to have a AEM CAI, switched to a AEM SRI. I didn't notice any difference in power at all. The SRI has a bit of a deeper sound, the CAI has the whining noise. That's about it.
And lastly the V2 and bypasses actually rob you of power. They deduct power by around 2-4 HP in most cases. Not much but still pointless.
SRI > CAI

So why haven't I hydrolocked? Why is it that Turbo guys inject water into their engines?

AEM tested their CAI's and it would not suck water unless the filter was fully submerged. You seriously have to fuck up to hydrolock a car. Maybe you guy's know people who bought cheap, crappy CAIs, or maybe their shit just blew up and they blamed the CAI
Like kaluwa said, you won't really notice the power difference. The only thing you can do to your intake to make a noticeable power difference is drill a hole and spray nitrous into it, or pipe your intake to a turbo that happens to be connected to your exhaust, as well as your oil, and (sometimes) coolant lines.Last edited by omgwtfbbq!; 05-20-2008 at 12:53 PM.

The one in My Friends Celica was AEM....just cause they put out a test does not mean that it still can not happen

You're one of the lucky ones I suppose. It happened to my friends car and I've heard of it happen other times too. Is it really worth worrying about it when it doesn't even give you more power? The numbers don't lie.
I like not having to worry about hauling ass through puddles.
Just my opinion.

Actually, I think I'm lucky because I have bald tires. Everytime I hit a puddle I just hydroplane right over it, which is lovely in the rain (read as: don't drive near me when its wet outside).
So, there you go, good tires, a short ram and its throaty noise, shitty tires, a CAI, and its high pitched whistle.

idk , ive had it for 2 years and you guys know it rains here like everyday and ive never had a problem(knock on wood) even about a year ago when it rained for a couple of days straight there was some flooding and i went through it and nothing happened but that might of been just luck..
Also tests ran on a dyno will give u different results on the road when you dont DRIVE with the hood open!Last edited by YaNPeR; 05-20-2008 at 01:01 PM.
