Kia Safety
I remember when Kia's first came out, and they were notoriously unsafe. Supposedly, they've got really good ratings now, which would mean some sort of improvement, right?
Anybody else think this is an excessive amount of damage to this car?? I mean, holy crap! It looks like EVERYTHING failed.

I'm sure it hit that bus pretty hard to do that much damage to the bus, but still...it seems excessive to me. It says the Kia went across the centerline and hit the bus head-on. If I'm not mistaken, the speed limit on that stretch of road is 35 or so and it's just plain unsafe to drive over 45. So I don't imagine this was a high speed head-on collision.

I'm just not sure how fast he could have been going. It's very narrow, 2 lane, lots of curves, no shoulder. kwim?
I guess we'll see when more info comes out.Amanda

I dont wanna be a smart ass, but do you think your Mustang could have donne better than that Kia on a crash like this one? I mean take a good look at the bumper on the bus, that thing is rock solid and on a heads on collision the is a lot of force involved even at low speeds. Consider the weight of the bus and the inercia involved in this!! It seems that the car went under the bus, thats the reason the A pillar is gonne! I hope they are all right specially the kids on the bus!

Jesus is the WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 12's are soo fun...

Let's just say both vehicles were doing about 40 MPH. That means that combined momentum would apply the impact force at a combined speed of 80 MPH. Take any car and run it head-on into an object at 80 MPH and it doesn't matter what the safety rating is...you're dead. Government crash tests are run at 40 MPH, and momentum rises exponentially for every MPH you go faster. So the hit at 80 is several times stronger...
I feel bad for everyone involed.

Okay, guess I'm the only one that things this vehicle's safety features failed.

BTW, leit, I don't drive either of my Mustangs on the street, except an occasional car show. My Lincoln, however, might have crumpled the hood and a fender.
Also, I don't think the car went under the bus, only because it wasn't reported with that info and in some of the pictures, you can see investigators taking pictures of everything, and there are no marks placed on the road to indicate where the car had been before being pulled back out from under the bus. kwim?
I've seen a ton of head on collisions at 60-70mph, and that Kia looks as bad as, if not worse, than the ones I've seen. I don't suspect the bus was going more than 35.
And just to clarify for people concerned about the kids on the bus, there weren't any, and the driver of the bus was not injured. The driver of the car was flown to a hospital and was in critical condition. I haven't checked for an update. They did not have any personal details of the driver of the Kia, either. There was a pic that was a clear shot of the license plate, but I didn't want to post it in case the person passes...seems family should be notified more formally that happening upon a photo and realizing that was their loved one.Last edited by Ford DNA; 05-15-2008 at 02:20 PM.

Those buses are built rock solid, for that car to do that much damage to it, there had to be alot of force involved. Imo it does look like the buses wheel went over the front of the Kia. The kia may not have went entirely under the bus but from that buses axel it looks like it caught the A frame or some part of the roof of the car. Course I aint no fancy smancy crash investigator neither.
