uuuhhh it usually costs more to do it yourself. I mean, I even have an initial investment of ramps. I get to pick the good oil I want to use, and I put in the exact correct amount. Sorry, I avoid mechanics whenever possible because I never can trust them. Some mechanics have told me some of the hugest amounts of bullshit.
5 qts of oil at say $3.88 = $19.40 (I usually spend more than that)
an oil filter is usually 4 or 5 bucks.
and it takes me 20 minutes to do it, and I take my time.
I don't fuck up the oil nut with a power tool, and I don't use a damn wrench putting the oil filter on like a damn mechanic does.
So tell me where you spend 25 bucks on an oil change. Because if you went to most places it can be done for under 20, espcially if you get a coupon! Sure it might be an 11 minute oil lube or some crap like that where they probably don't even bother changing the filter when they're in a rush. Then you've spent time & money driving there and probably waiting because your not the only guy that doesn't know anything about his/her car.
Yes theres a collection of about 3 gallons of used motor oil that is in need of dumping in my garage. But its called discount auto parts, and its free to dump it. No one says you gotta do it the day you drain it.
I'm not a cheap bastard, in fact I'm spending more than you. I'd just like knowing it was taken care of properly, not half-assed.

Believe it or not, there are only 5 prime manufacturers of oil filters in the counrty, Fram, Purolator, Baldwin, Donaldson and Luber-finer. They all private label for everyone else. Luber-finer makes the NAPA filters.
I bought a Trufilter TFL35, a billet reuseable filter. I like it because when I change the oil, I can see what's happening to the motor. This filter will last me for 10+ years or more and has a stainless steel element and a magnet in the base. I thought the NAPA Gold filters (as well as K&N and Mobil 1) were from "Champion Labs." I'm not 100%, I read that somewhere.
That Trufilter looks pretty cool, but how do you clean out an oil filter like that, parts solvent? Regardless, I think for someone who plans on keeping their car for an extended period of time, that oil filter seems to be a smart way to go.

haha and you are what I would call a lazy bastard...why wouldn't you change your own oil?? I let the oil drain for a long time to make sure I get everything out, clean everything, make sure I have no leaks or broken cv axle boots etc. When I do my own oil change I know it's done right...I've heard too many storys where jiffy lube or some shit will send a car off without an oil filter installed properly or installed at all or with no oil back in it...yeah no thanks on that one.

I work at a oil change place and the worst place to go to is jiffy lube. They are a bunch of brain dead monkeys.
Old schooler.
