Get the two relays and do what you just said, i dont see what you're confused about?

some relays have the prong numbers actually printed on it, so you wont get confused.

85 and 86 are interchangeable unless you have a polarized relay....which you would only get fron online specialty sites..... those 2 tabs are just the coil side of the relay, put current through the relay in either direction and it trips the contacts.

87 and 87a are the normally open and normally closed side of the contacts and 30 is the common side of the contacts. as long as the device is powered by running through the contacts then it doesn't matter if you hook power to 87 and then 30 to the device or hook power to 30 and 87 to the device the result is the same......when the relay is energized the contacts flip and give power to your circuit.

hook your switch to one side of the coil and the item you want to power to one side of the contacts. the rest is power and ground hookups

If you got 4 post ones, they are the wrong ones (SPST). You need the 5 post ones (SPDT). After Googleing the part number I posted it looks like it is the wrong one (SORRY). Just go back and exchange them for the 5 post ones, they should have those as well.

I have a five post relay in front of me.
Terminals are labeled:
30
85
86
87
87a

It came from a japanese car.
A dodge Neon has the same relay used for
horn and A/C clutch. The numbers on the relay are:
56006709
50732
a third number is "melted" into the plastic , maybe a batch number.

You can get this relay at a junkyard......-Bob

So if one terminal is not used, why do you need a SPDT 5 pin relay?-Bob

No matter how the relay is labeled with numbers it should have a diagram on it and you can wire it up from that. The diagrams will pretty much have a coil on them that throws a high amp switch, you just need to coordinate which number goes with which wire you have, since it sounds like the numbers change (I'm used to 30, 87 etc) I usually go by the diagrams anyway, so if you need to refer to this:

As long as you are using the correct fuse and gauge wire for the amps, I don't see why you couldn't use a single throw relay and splice the wire that goes to the load into 2 sepererate wires?
