Indy Racing Idiots
Not necessarily car chat but I just had to say something about this. I just heard on Cold Pizza that some IRL drivers boycotted a autograph session because they felt Danica Patrick was going to get too many fans and take away from the other drivers! How outrageous is this? These guys have no concept of what she does for the sport, and instead of being happy there are fans that want them to sign crap for them they boycott and make themselves look like a bunch of spoiled little brats.
Let the woman drive and let her enjoy her fame a little bit, she's damn good, nearly won the Indy 500 and has placed 10th or better in 5 races and she's a ROOKIE who barely even drove ovals before she got to the IRL. They better start respecting her because I give these guys until next year to win races because after that she's gonna own the circuit.

If that's true its lame. I don't watch IRL or Champ car or whatever because the winning interview always goes something like this.
"the.....uh.....how you say......................team......deeed.......... .....good vith getting.......uh.......................my car.......uh........prepred for ze.......race..........................today.
If more english speaking people showed up to race (like Danica) I may watch more of it. I watch racing to root for someone I relate to. WRC, I root for Fords (since there's no Americans in that series), Nextel Cup, Fords or good people (Mark Martin, Michael Waltrip etc). I can't relate to some dude from a country I've never heard of whose idea of wheel to wheel racing is 2 cars being on the same straight at the same time.

It's hype. IRL probably put the drivers up to it just to get the free press. Racers more than any other sport are in it for the fun and thrill, not so much the fame.

lol, when Tony George tried that the IRL almost folded... TG split from champ car and formed the IRL with a focus on inexpensive chassis/engine combos, oval tracks and American drivers..... as you can see the IRL from the mid - late 90's looks nothing like the IRL of today.

As far as the series itself I think they need to change some things most importantly joining with Champ Car to get rid of the 'rivalry' and stop halving the viewership on Sunday afternoons. Plus I think they need to have some more non-oval races a la St.Pete Grand Prix, it'll make the racing more interesting to the common fan and seperate it from NASCAR.

They really fucked up bigtime splitting the series. Left the door wide open for NASCAR to hawk lots of fans. It will be a long time and difficult road to gain the prestige Indy cars had since the 1900s all the way up through the 80s.
