most places i have talked to charge $75 a wheel. if i had stripped them it would have cost less.

A few years ago ProCoat did a set of wheels for me for $90 each. They did a beautiful job.

On my old Mercedes, I bought some 18"x8" Carlsson wheels that were painted black. I thought that was cool at first, but seeing them on my white car made it look like a Mercedes tuned by Spoon. So I had them stripped and pc'd

Here is the story. First to get them stripped, if they are aluminum like my Carlssons were, you need to get them bead blasted instead of sand blasted because sand blast will pit the wheels. This part was super expensive, like almost $200 for all four wheels.

Then the pc part was cheap. I had all four done for something like $80. It sucked though because shortly after they began to peel. I ended up selling them.

If you powdercoat, get ready to get some new valve stems because the heat process will destroy your. I had to pay to get tires mounted to find out they were leaking, only to pay to get them unmounted to put valve stems on and mount them again.

It was all a huge pain in the ass, and I would never do it again. The pc only lasted for like a week before they peeled. It was also costly.

Sounds like you had someone who didn't know what they were doing overcharged you for prep and powdercoating your wheels. My aluminum wheels were $90 each to strip, prep, and powdercoat. Had them for three years. Even curbed the shit out of one, and no problems with peeling. Sold my wheels to a friend and they still look like the day I picked them up from ProCoat. Like paint, if the surface isn't prepped properly the powder won't adhere to the surface correctly...thus the peeling problem with your wheels. Done properly, powdercoating should outlast standard paint.

Taking off the valve stems is just common sense. You cannot properly prep a wheel without taking them out. Plus anyone should know baking rubber in an oven isn't exactly the smartest idea. Who did the work? I think we all would like to know where NOT to go.

I have had alot of stuff done and it really holds up. My goped was done and i crashed it many times without a scratch. I'm getting my rims back this week. I dint think $75 a wheel is too much that is a common price. I do wish i had asked because i would have rather givin the buisness to a fellow TR member.

I knew it was poor quality work. The shop that did it is in Toledo, Ohio so you guys dont need to worry about it. I would have made them re-do everything but I moved out shortly after getting wheels back.

You can take care of the prep work by useing aircraft paint remover. Plenty of people have used that to strip their rims with no ill affects. ts very toxic so use in a well ventilated place. Have the tires, valve stems, and weights off the rim before working on them. It should take but a few minutes per wheel. Brush on, wait a few minutes, then wiped off and your done.

yea that is true about the glass bead but it is all the same. glass sand all the same what it is is the grit. I use 80 grit glass on aluminum very fine glass and doesn't pit. actually I use it on everything just takes a little longer on some parts

There's a tamparacing local(brooksville) member that powdercoats...if he can fit one of your rims in the oven Im sure he could do better than 75 a wheel. PM him his name is Tranceologist.
