DYNO TESTING
The goal at the outset of the build was 480 hp, while Gillis and Broadway were hoping to see somewhere north of 500. The first few pulls using Broadway’s dyno-tested 750cfm Holley came in around 480 — a good sign. Switching over to Gillis’ blueprinted, NHRA-spec Holley 735cfm carburetor saw performance climb with every pull — first, 493 hp and 477 lbs-ft of torque, then 500 hp and 488 lbs-ft of torque. The third and final pull saw the numbers edge to 502 hp and 491 lbs-ft of torque. Peak horsepower comes in at 5,850 rpm, but carries nicely to 6,250. Peak torque was at 4,900, though we saw 486 lbs-ft from 4,000 on.
Broadway estimates that the B/Stock Automatic record holder is making around 519 hp — some believe far more powerful combinations are out there, but chassis efficiency plays a big part. This Cobra Jet is not far off of that 519 number, though, especially taking into account that certain limitations were made to keep the engine reliable for a long time to come.
Broadway and Gillis plan to revisit the dyno testing in the near future, as they have a set of roller rocker arms to try, as well as the Quick Fuel Technology, NHRA-spec SSR-780-VS in their hands to test. Given the amount of stock components used in the build, 502 horsepower is very respectable, even by today’s standards.

A Quick Alternative
The NHRA often specifies stock-style aftermarket parts to be used in a number of areas and sometimes it offers the option of using a particular aftermarket part over a stock one. Many of these classic parts that make up many Stock Eliminator combinations are becoming harder and harder to find, so companies like Quick Fuel Technology (QFT) have stepped up to provide a similar alternative such as this SSR-780-VS carburetor.
“Our SSR-Series line of carburetors are specifically created for class racing and are approved by each sanctioning body for competition,” notes QFT’s Bill Wetzel. “These gauge-rule carburetors are built to the strictest tolerances, while staying within sanctioning body guidelines.” The SSR-780-VS is calibrated for Stock and Super Stock classes and comes equipped with QFT’s QuickSet vacuum secondaries for easy adjustment without replacing the spring.
Included with each carburetor is a spec sheet, letter of acceptance from the NHRA, and a letter from QFT noting the legal NHRA-spec carbs as well as the adjustments that the SSR-780-VS offers.
While we didn’t have time to test the QFT carb back-to-back with the Holley, we suspect that the additional tuning enhancements it offers would produce a few more horsepower over the factory Holley, so we plan to find out at a later date.
