My latest problem.....GRRRR

I got it all together and running good....Now it won't charge? WTF?

The alternator is brand new. I took it in and had it tested anyway, and it tested out good.

Let me esplaine....

I got it all together and running sounding good. Then I take it out on the road and flogg it. It runs GREAT. (feels way stronger than it ever has before) However, after it has run for a few minutes, the volt meter in the dash shows no more charging. I double checked when I got home with an external handheld volt meter. Not charging. I changed out the alternator with a good one I had in the garage. It did the same thing, so I had the new one that I just took off tested. It tested good, so I put it back on. Same story. So, I started the car, and let the wife watch the gauge while I was fiddling with the wires on the alternator harness. She said the gauge would jump occasionally, so I replaced the alternator pigtail. Still the same story. I took it out, drove it 5 miles, and it stopped charging while I was looking at the gauge. Took it home, and shut it down. Let it cool off a little, started it again and let it run. It ran for about 2 minutes while I sat in the car, then as I sat there, the darn thing stopped charging again.....So I have come to you guys....Anyone else had this problem before? If so, what was it?

And I know it isn't the firing order this time.

Haha I had one before. They rarely put out enough at idle if anything at all. When they sit idling at a light, they begin to discharge. Plus....Not enough $$$$ right now to get one. Think CHEAP.

check all fuses... it sounds dumb but it happened with my 94 cobra. check all grounds too. check to make sure that all connections from the alternator to the rest of the harness to make sure they are tight. and also check the plug that goes to the alternator i think its 3 wires but it could be 2 this plug has a nasty habit of burning up on the inside where it is hard to notice. good luck the 94-95 5.0's will try your patience to the very end but they are also one of the most fun cars you can ever own. the new look with good old pushrod power is a great combination. i have had mine for almost 2 years now and it still makes my heart beat faster whenever im behind the wheel. 1 msjor piece of advice i can give you is to get it tuned ASAP i would suggest tony ganyon at hp performance 904-276-7223 in orange park (pretty much jacksonville) he tuned my car andd it was a whole different animal after wards the best $600 i have ever spent and that includes buying my supercharger. if you need any advice pm me i am more than willing to help another stang banger.

Primer??? huh?? Yeah, the firing order is fine now....LMAO

I replaced the electrical plug to the back of the alternator. It's a three wire plug. I thought it was the problem too. The cable to the fusebox from the alt is fine. All fuses are fine. The grounds are fine. At least, all this LOOKS fine. I have checked for continuity on the alt cable, but not all the grounds.

Tonight, I changed out the alternator AGAIN and put on my older one and took off the new one. I drove it around the bolck and it was fine, then I went on a 10 mile trip. Still fine. It seems it's fine now, and the problem may have been the alt was heating up too hot. IDK yet. I'll know after tomorrow though.

Reman'd units have a tendency to stop charging when they get hot. I have the complete opposite issue with my 3g alt. whne it gets hot it charges too much.

Yeah, I think thats the problem with my reman unit. I think the regulator is bad, but only stops charging when it's hot. By the time I get it to the parts store, it's cooled off, and tests fine. Therefore, they won't issue a refund or exchange. Fukrs!

Adam...Nice sig.

This may sound dumb but any chance that it could be the battery?i know the alt isnt charging but maybe that battery is messing something up?

Last time I was there, they said that, so I asked them how much to test the battery. They said "free", so I said then get busy. LOL Battery is fine.
