On Saturday, July 30th Gateway Classic Cars Orlando held their 1st Cars and Coffee event with Cruisin’ Orlando. Gateway’s Orlando showroom is located in Lake Mary. Opened in July 2014, it became the seventh location for Gateway. They now have 14 locations across the country, three of which are right here in Florida. If you’re not familiar with Gateway, they are a consignment shop where you can sell your classic car or buy the classic car you’ve always wanted. For more information on their services and locations, check out www.gatewayclassiccars.com.
One of the best parts of a ‘Cars & Coffee’ show in July is that you get up and out early, hopefully before the Florida summer heat gets to be unbearable. I like to get to shows early so that I can shoot cars arriving. With a 9:00am start time, I was pretty sure I’d be the first one there when I arrived at 7:45. Wrong! There were already three or four cars in the large parking lot when I arrived. That was my first clue that this was going to be a busy show. By 8:15, the parking lot was half full and cars were streaming in. By 9:00, the official start time, the parking lot had almost reached capacity, and it was barely 85 degrees yet. And the cars kept coming…
After an hour and a half of watching/shooting cars arriving, it was time to move inside and check out the other ‘car show’ inside of Gateway Classics. With (as of 8/3/16) 177 cars in their Orlando location, there was plenty of eye candy to enjoy in the large, well-lit showroom. From a 1914 Dodge touring car all the way to a 2013 Tesla Model S, there’s a really interesting cross section of collector cars available for purchase. I really liked the ’48 Ford F1 pickup, and the badass ’68 Dart. There were lots of car show attendees checking out the showroom, but even more of them were partaking of the coffee and pastries. It was too hot for me to have coffee, but a complimentary bottle of ice cold water (and a mini cinnamon bun or two) did help to prep me for the outside again.
Back outside, the show was in full swing. DJ Don from Cruisin’ Orlando was playing great music and the parking lot had reached capacity. In addition to the many club Mustangs and Challengers, there was an eclectic mix of cruisers. There were three Porsches parked near a very radical pro-street Mercury Cougar. There was a gorgeous Mazda RX3 (yep, old school rotary), Camaros, Corvettes, trucks, VWs, and much more. The ’34 Ford Coupe was one of my favorites, along with the ’79 Trans Am, and the ’57 Chevy, and the…
In what seemed like the blink of an eye, 12:00 rolled around and cars started heading out. The first Gateway Classic Cars “Cars & Coffee” was a hit. If you missed it, you missed a great show. The good news, though, is that it will be happening again. The 4th Saturday of the month will be the date for the next one.
