Lake Mirror Promenade


Beginning in 2013, the mission of the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival will be to help fund the preservation and restoration of historic Lake Mirror Park so that our community and it’s guests will be able to enjoy this nationally registered landmark for many generations to come. The Friends of Lake Mirror Fund is a newly created non-profit fund administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland. In addition to a portion of the proceeds from the Lake Mirror Classic, individual and corporate donations will be graciously accepted.The Lake Mirror Promenade (also known as the Frances Langford Promenade, or the First Civic Center) is the host of most of the events for the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival. Designed by Charles Leavitt, and championed by Tom Appleyard, the then-manager of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, the Promenade was constructed in 1928. It is a member of the National Register of Historic Places, added January 27, 1983.
History

Downtown Lakeland’s history for the last 100 years is reflected in the developing story of Lake Mirror. The work to make Lake Mirror a downtown destination started early in the 20th Century. Not long after the promenade’s 1928 dedication, National Geographic said of the area around the lake, “Like an ornate entrance to some vast Venetian palace looms the Civic Center of Lakeland.”

The Great Depression affected not only our standard of living, but our civic pride. By the time Lakeland made it through the Depression and World War II, the city was looking for chances to trumpet Downtown. In March 1946, the walkway around Lake Mirror was dedicated as the Frances Langford Promenade, after one of our city’s residents who had found stardom in radio and movies.
Decay

In the mid 1950′s, US Highway 92′s Business route was built around the exterior of Lake Mirror, connecting Main Street and Lemon Street directly to Bartow Highway. This spelled trouble for the park, for both shores were almost completely surrounded with roadway.
Storms and improper cleaning would damage the seawall in the 1960s. In 1973, The Ledger wrote that the lighting was failing and should be replaced. By April 1974, the Tampa Tribune would decry the downfall of the area in an article entitled, “Once-Beautiful Seawall, Civic Center in Decay.”
In an article in the March 1979 Ledger, a reporter wrote “At one time the loggia, under Main Street, housed restrooms, benches, and a grotto. But the traffic around the lake increased so much that there were seldom pedestrians in the area and finally the loggia was closed, barred and locked. Today the city’s electric and water department use the loggia to store equipment.”
Recovery

The time was ripe for a small group of citizens to reverse the damage and force a change. Historic Lakeland formed with the goal of rebuilding Lake Mirror. By 1983, they successfully petitioned to have the area added to the National Registry of Historic Places. By 1987, the city rededicated a repaired and refreshed Lake Mirror.
Since the late 80s, there have been many more improvements: Lemon Street south of the park is closed, Hollis Gardens sits on the Southern shore, the old Dixie Highway landing now sports Albert Paley’s “Tribute to Volunteerism.”

I wrote this in 2010:
Specifically....15/16 October..........I was there for the Rock and Roll band "JR and the MD's" on Friday night..........ate some BBQ and drank lemonade......looked at the Rods, Race cars and muscle cars. Listened to the music...

A Babe next to me looked up with her big brown eyes and said she was cold....so I wrapped myself.....let's correct that.....I wrapped my *arms* around her and got her hot......warmed up........I thought it was the gentlemanly thing to do.......thought about putting on a bit of a show for the people around us....

On Saturday they had the El Expenso Rolls, Mercedes and exotics around the lake, and the Rock and Roll band was replaced with violin/strings music. Saw some cars that I had only read about in books. The "Rainy Day Rolls" from the Salvadore Dali museum was on display.........gotta see it......it was raining and thundering INSIDE the car......

On the streets to the West of the lake, they segmented them off by car type. A-model/T-model Fords, Cobras, Vettes, Race cars, Ferraris
Exotics, Deloreans...back To The Future?.....(4 of them)....including one of the three factory PAINTED stainless steel cars....Hot Rods....

Rock and Roll music supplied by WJBJ and others.....interviews for the cable TV show "Tailfins and Chrome"......saw a DeTomaso race car that I had seen them race in the 24 hours of Daytona long ago, but this car was almost perfectly restored with a tube frame.......it took a father and son 19 YEARS to restore it.......beautiful......and functional....

I get back over to my 89 Accord and found a post-it note on
the windshield:
"Man, your car is gay. No TR for you!".........you jokers....

Saw some Nissan show-quality cars, but if no Hondas show up
guess who wins there? I have seen the Hondas who can win
at the meets which I go to.-Bob
