Need Help Setting up 240 for drift

Hey Everyone, I just bought an 89 240sx. I want to get into drifting. I'm starting with suspension and an engine, but i was a little confused about what suspension parts I need. Is there a certain site for drift suspension. Whats the difference between track and drift suspensions. The first thing that i'm going to buy are the swaybars, but what lenght? What brand is the best. What other parts are essential for drifting in the feild of suspension? Thanks for the help.

Ok, first off, do lot's and lot's of research.

If you are going on a budget, get some badgerworks coilovers. Badger Werks: For the Win

Then get a Battle version/or any other mult-link setup. You can get those through tons of sites, like Enjukuracing.com

Don't even worry about the motor until you have the suspension done, and you are comfortable driving the car with that setup.

Make sure you do all the general maintenance on your car, cause drifting is the most harmful motor sport, besides rally racing.

It would be good to attend a few autocross events to get a feel for the limits of the car, and yourself.

That's all I'm going to say for now.

thanks guys. Also, I'm not sure what trim this car is. Ti doesnt say on the title or VIN number. It has power windows, locks, all around disk brakes. No sunroof. Cruise control.

Make sure the car runs well, replace anything necessary, knocks, creaks, leaks, tie downs, loose parts, learn how to drift it stock then worry about coils.. it all depends on your budget..

Ok first, weld the diff, or buy an expensive 2 way.
as far as what supension parts you need, coil overs, tc rods are the best place to start.
The track models are for track use, usually much stiffer etc etc, street models will ride a little nice but wont perform as good.
Do not waste your time or money as sway bars right now. and they dont come in lengths, the come in diameters.

Try to make it out to a desoto drift test and tune, everyone is willing to help teach, and we have a couple pro drivers who come out to instruct.

if i could go back and do it again this is what i would do.

1. fix anything broken(like that one guy said), replace brake pads
2. buy some new front tires
3. cut the springs (or buy coilovers).
4. weld the dif.
5. drive your car as much as possible.

from what ive learned, drifting a car that you put 1,500 into is sooooooooooooo much more fun then drifting a car you put 5,000 + in to.

the S13 is to cars what the AK47 is to guns.

drifting is about finesse(and reliability) not power, at least to me it is

I forgot to mention weld the diff, but I thought a differential change (clutch type, QUAIFE, Welded) was implied after you learn how to drift the peg leg.. learn to drift without relying on the welded diff.

I would get sway bars first to keep it stable. Lower it, but only to the point for now, that stock adjusters are still used.

Stay with skinny tires until you have some horses to break the car loose. Get cheap tires from the junkyard, until you get a tire sponsor. Hit some practice/autocross schools to get the feel of driving/sliding. Check TR's events/autocross/forums.

Big s-bar on the back will bring the back around. Get one cheap from the junkyard. I have made brackets to mount stock double s-bars on my car.

Heavier bars come from top of the line cars......LX has bigger than DX's,
"sport" models have bigger than low dollar cars.

When you want someone to look at what size bars you have and what you should go to, based on how it handles, pm me. It might be a fun project
to help you out.

Buy me lunch at one of the schools, Ft Myers, etc. and we can try some setups....need to see what you have on it now.-Bob

Going to the JDM meet in Clearwater this Sunday 14 October?
