For all you noob's and beginers
I hear the same questions all the time when it comes to people wanting to know how to drift. The simple fact of the matter is that if you have little to no high performance driving exsperience you shouldn't start to drift. You have to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run. Some of the reason the professionals are as good as they are was they were involved in another form of motorsports before drifting. You have to learn how to control a car at the limit before you can control a car past the limit. My advise to a beginer that seriously wants to get good at drifting would be this: GO BECOME A MEMBER OF YOUR LOCAL SCCA! Then go autocross.....alot! Its cheap and easy to learn how to do. And will teach you all the basics of car control you'll need to know later when you start drifting. 2nd thing would be to attend an SCCA approved driving school. Panoz,Skip Barber, etc. This will fine tune your skills and make you better adapted to use them. Now i know some of these schools aren't cheap, but its well worth the money. Then after that you should be ready to attend some practice drift events. ITs kinda hard to jump strait in to drifting because of the level of car control needed.
i know this is kinda long winded, but i'm sure i'll have more to add later.

yes it is^^. other questions i get asked all the time is what are the 1st mods i should do to my 240/driftcar/whatever,etc. My advise would be to make sure your car is in proper working order in factory condition 1st before you start modding it. I.E. give it a tune up, check the brakes, make sure it doesn't spew any sort of massive fluids around. seat belts work yuadda yadda yadda. once this has been acheived then you can go about trying to make a good daily driver/drift car. I'll use what i did with my 240 as an example. TIRES!!! tires are your biggest factor on how the car handles!! just spend some money and get good ones for the front. i would say something with a treadwear of less then 300. Azenis, kumho 712 are good. if your stuck with the KA, well thats fine, a n/a ka will drift just fine. do timing, intake, exhaust, e-fans, for starters. possibly get some lowering springs and shocks, although not nessesary. the thing with a 240 is that you can do small things everytime you get paid and it ends up making a nice package after awhile. the 1st 2 things i bought for my car were a set of T/C rods and a solid pollyurethane tranny mount. those 2 things made a world of difference. after that some s14 seats and a vlsd would be my next purchase along with some more wheels. strut tower bars from ebay are cheap as hell. you should be able to get pretty far with thatset up, i know it won me a couple competitions.

good points. it kills me when i see kids out there with these busted ass cars trying to ask more out of the car then it can take. It took me 2 years of slowly fixing my car (while i was in school) to get it in "factory condition" before i even considered doing what i have done to it. Granted it will and should take you less time given money and effort and time, but thats my example.

this is just a few pointers for all you beginers. not tring to be a dick, just tring to make it easy for the n00b's to find answers to their questions without getting flammed. yes you can drift anything RWD, will it be easy or cheap like a 240....no, but if you want something different than have at it. if you want the "ol standby" then 240 it is. if it ain't broke then don't fix it.
***another note: CARS WITH SEMI TRAILING ARM REAR SUSPENSION SUCK TO DRIFT!!!****** and should not be used by beginers. not saying it can't be done, but they have irregular handling characteristics at and beyond the limit, which is not what you want in a drift car. short list of cars with this suspension should be avioded if at all posible

That's a Hawaiian guy. It is possible to drift FWD, I can tell by your posts you aren't intelligent enough to know that much about physics.

see there are exceptions to every rule, but for the most part cars with semi trailing arm rear suspension aren't a good car to start with and require alot to get them set up right.... any car can handle one or two corners were all your doing is powering threw them, but when you have alot of transitions and tring to slow down while sideways you will find the weaknesses of that suspesnion desighn. even cars with solid rear axles can be a hand full.

car's that are good to start out in drifting with are imo...
1) any year 240sx
2) mazda miata
3) mk3/mk4 supra
4) mustang sn95 or newer (fox body's need alot of work)
5) ae86 corolla's or equivelant
6) fd rx-7/fc rx-7
7) IS300 5spd
e36 or newer bmw
9) e30 bmw
10) big body lexus or infinity (LS,GS, mx8 cressida, q45, ect)
again i can't stress enough about how these cars are all old with a ton of miles on them. first thing you should do is give the cars a once over. make them run right and spend yoru money wisely. i've seen to many morons that spend money on coilover's on their 240 and have stock blown t/c rods and shitty all season tires in the front.
and step one would still be spending money on your self first. its no good spending money on a car and making it better if you can't driveLast edited by hachibill; 07-19-2010 at 10:14 AM.
