does anyone know how? i need to get it out to take it to a machine shop

im not sure on VW but I work for chrysler and I dont think there is a way to. I think it is welded. maybe I am not understanding your question right.

shaft? as in the shiny part that comes out of it? the long rod (hehe) thats threaded at the top? the only way to remove it is to destroy the strut....and prolly hurt yourself too.

I just pictured a rather animated person trying to take it apart and somehow getting it loose and the shaft went flying through the wall and hit the neighbors dog...
not sure why, but eh, my mind's weird...

anywho... to the OP
take a pic of what you are trying to do and post it up... That way, there is no doubt of what part you are actually talking about...

Go with Bob, I'll do it but I will not crack open a damper for less then $150, I've been down that road before... However if your ready for come custom valving and work. I have been building custom suspension components for REAL race cars for over 10 years.
