Coilover overhauling
I have Zeal Function X coilovers on my Z and the rears need to be rebuilt real bad. Everybody says oh just go to a bike shop because a lot of them rebuild coilovers but I've yet to find a place that does it. Does anyone actually know of a place that can do this for me? I'm just avoiding shipping them off to California to get them rebuilt because I can't afford to wait a month to get them back. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can perform shock rebuilds, however that being said the Zeal parts are forgien to me and will require measuring and custom ordering of seals, shims and valves. metric seals are common and easy to get and I strictly use moutl multi-viscosity fluid. there IS a shock shop in Tampa but they are strictly Carerra and QA-1 which to the best of my knowledge use all "standard" or English measurements, which won't help your ZEALS... but they do have a shock dyno...
the question I always ask is not only what is wrong, but what do you want changed? to rebuild and re-seal is a easy task if you can put up with the time and expense. Last edited by treekiller : 05-24-2008 at 12:41 AM. |

All I need is for them to be rebuilt and resealed. My rear end does nothing but bounce all over the place lol. I made the mistake of buying my coilovers from N1_STYLEz on this forum. He stated that they have custom spring rates (12k front, 10K rear) and that they are custom valved and only have 500 miles on them. I put them on my car the day they arrived and the fronts are great but the rears were blown to crap. So I just really want my rears to be how they are supposed to be. How much will you charge? I'd be happy to give you some business.

There in Lies the problem. I won't know what the exact cost is until I've disassembled them and looked depending on who makes them for Zeal (Most Likely Showa) they might need some special tools made or might not. are they in the car. if so we might have to look at them and take some measurements. I might be able to build something that will work and be a bit more robust for less then a rebuild which can run as high as $600 or more depending on what they need or you want done.
The nice thing you are dealing with as being a 300Zx suspension is very similar to the 240SX and parts should be cheap and in stock at most places to create somthing custom and cheap. Last edited by treekiller : 05-24-2008 at 12:42 AM. |

sorry for the threadjack, but treekiller, what do you mean by custom?
as in, I say I want this spring rate and to handle this much abuse, and what not like that and you can hook it up or what? I ask cuz I'm in the process of paperbuilding both a custom bodied 240sx and a rx7, and that having a custom suspesion setup would solve some of the problems. thanks |

What CAN I do...
anything from re valving a damper for an uprated spring to modifying the pickup points to allow more tire clearance or better suspension geometry ANYTHING can be done custom if you have the time inclination and most importantly knowledge.... oh and some money helps too. I started racing when there was not any after market support unless you had a Porsche or BMW, and a boatload of cash, a coil-over damper was only a dream. so we had to fab most everything up or use existing technologies. bolting in off the shelf parts is only scratching the surface of what CAN be done. |

Even the majority of the people that claim "built, not bought" are just installing the parts they bought themselves. I would love to know how to do even half of the stuff you know how to do. I'm looking forward to discussing some options in the very near future. |

I think Z32 and S14 rear shocks are the same minus the lower mount.
