hey, quick question bike tech:

how do u check the FI codes on a 2007 GSXR 600???? i looked in the tail and couldn't find the little jumper harness to plug a paper clip into..

also, once i find out which code number it is, do any of u know the website i can look at to find out what code number that stands for???

any help greatly appriciated...thanks

There have been millions of threads all over the internet on the ongoing problem with Gixxers and the FI light due to the exhaust control system (ECS) - also known as Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET).

The ECS/SET is described by Suzuki marketing as follows:
Suzuki Exhaust Tuning system is built into the mid-pipe using a servo-controlled butterfly valve to tune the exhaust system to match engine rpm and improving low end torque

Everyone argues that this is bullshit and Suzuki puts it there for emissions purposes and muffling sound. In fact, someone did a full Dyno test and proved that there's a 2hp gain at low end RPMs with ECS/SET disabled. Arguing this is for another forum.

In this forum, I want to tell you that I indeed fixed my FI light by removing the ECS/SET and I highly recommend it to Gixxer owners who are pestered by this stupid alarm.

The problem is that the exhaust control valve actuator (EXCVA) is an electric motor in the tail of the bike that is plugged into the ECM and the actuator is super sensitive with voltage and operation that any slight problem and it sends the FI code -C46 to the ECM and thus your FI light. This is happening on pretty much every Gixxer with a ECS/SET (which includes 2006-200. It may happen at different mileage but if the cables or voltage get out of synch (which is normal with aging) the actuator throws -C46.

I've heard from other forums that Suzuki has a replacement actuator but some of those people were good for a while, then got FI eventually.

So my logic was that I don't care about emissions, muffling, low end torque (if that's even true), and my warranty (which is expired). But I DO care about a stupid FI alarm that comes on all the time for a retarded reason from a system that's not even needed.

So I removed mine and the FI light is gone for the -C46 reason.

If you buy a full exhaust system with new headers, the ECS/SET becomes useless anyway and you have to remove it. Here's the Yoshi full instructions which has illustrations on the wire removal for the ECM so you won't get the -C46:

And to help everyone understand how the ECS/SET works, I uploaded a few videos.

First, this is the EXCVA (actuator) and how it operates when you turn the ignition and engine start ON:

And then 2 suggestions regarding Nate's post on the detailed instructions on removing the ECS/SET.
1) He says to cut the wire - but the Yoshi instructions say to remove it from the plug. That's up to you. I went with the cut cause removing it was not that easy. If you can remove it, I guess that's cleaner for a reinstall if you ever have to.

2) The zip tie under the tank that hold the cables is actually a removable one. There's no need to cut it and replace it. Spin it around and you'll figure out the mechanism on how it's removable and reusable.

i figured that's what it was after asking around..i was just told to check and make sure before i adjusted ECS...because the FI code can come on for things like bad injectors and what not also..but hey..i wasn't sure how to adjust the ECS, so atleast i saved another post by not having to ask..

Thank you very much mustangman70, you are the man! really. early today I went for a ride with my girl and on the way to the beach the fi light came on for the first time after almost 4 thousand miles on my 07GSXR600, so I pull over because I thought my bike overheaded, but then I saw the fi which freaked me out, I did not know what that means or it was. so I call my friends and they told me it was something to do with my fuel-injectors. so I bought a fuel injector cleaner and I put it in, the light is not on anymore.


what happends if I dont removed the exhaust control system (ECS)? would it damage my bike in any- means or would just keep coming on and off every once in a while. I might removed it, this coming weekend but I am just wondering what would happend if I dont and the light just keep coming on. thank you again.

 

the SET valve is just a system to help the bike warm up quicker and run better in low RPMs, it basically improves backpressure by slightly blocking the path of your exhaust. Some people say that removing it will add more horsepower but its honestly unnecessary to remove unless it was actually sticking closed. since you have a new bike just take a cruise to the local Suzuki Dealer and have em run the code that your bike it throwing and if needed, adjust your set valve.
