Start off by setting up your drive with the partitions you want to use for each OS. Then you install each OS in its designated partition. I used to boot into RedHat with a Floppy disk when I wanted to fool around with it. Didn't really have much time to devote to it with a family though... but I could tell it was a nice OS back then... Would have probably used it longer if I had found scanner drivers, but everyone kept telling me to write my own

Def not an OS for noobs!

thank you sir!. im gonna try this sometime if i find a hard drive layin around somewhere.
now if you install the operating system in each partition, will you have a choice which one to boot first? does dual booting mean both operating systems are being used at the same time or can you switch operating systems like LOGGING ON and OFF on user accounts in windows xp? sorry for the noob questions

Its not quite like logging on and off. Its restarting the computer when you want to switch OS's.

On 99% of computers you have a default boot sector (which partition basically), so to pick between the two you hold down a button and select which partition to load if you have two or more - otherwise the default will boot (Windows in your case, Mac in my case).

On the Mac, I hold down the Option key when I first press the power button (basically your Windows key) and I get the option - Mac or Windows. On Windows, I believe its F8 or F5, but I could be wrong.

for a beginner, it's easiest to install linux/unix onto a comp with windows previously installed. fedora has a nice bootloader that will allow you to have both os's and choose which one to load at startup. you'll want a large hd or 2 separate drives... 50gb+ total would be good.

id like to recommend using a boot cd of the os you plan on using to try it out and see if you like it first.
like Redhat or knoppix.
i have a copy knoppix 4.3 which is pretty nice i think . i wanna get a dvd to get 5.1 ,i belive it is.
