The Beginning
The Wood Brothers Racing story began 66 years ago when family patriarch Glen Wood decided to try racing. It almost ended the same night it began.

Here is Glen’s memory of that first race and what followed:
“In 1950, at Morris Speedway, near Martinsville, VA, I was running along pretty good about the middle of the heat race, when they had a wreck in front of me. I was trying to go through a little narrow opening and hooked my left rear wheel on the bumper of one of the other cars. It bent the rear end housing, forcing us to quit. We were towing it behind another car, and got up the road about 10 miles. The wheel was wobbling from being bent and finally broke the axle. That, in turn, let the brake drum down on the pavement. As the wheel came out, it jerked the gas neck out of the tank and the gas spilled down and caught fire. Then, it caught the car afire, and it burned right there in the middle of the road. Finally, we got the car unhooked from it, but we didn’t have fire extinguishers. We had some extra gas cans and extra tires and tools that we were carrying in the racecar. And once in a while, a gas can would blow up in there. We were scared to get close to it because of that. So we let it burn until it burned up about everything. That was the first race I’d ever got to start. So we figured it all might be over.”
But, it wasn’t over. Glen and his friends got that car fixed and three weeks later he finished third in the main event at Dan River Speedway.
Our Legacy
The elder Wood went on to race on the beach in Daytona, win four races on the fledgling NASCAR circuit and become one of NASCAR’S 50 Greatest Drivers. Wood gave up his driving duties following the 1964 season. The team had already employed a number of other drivers during the previous eight years, and in 1965 Glen became a full-time owner.
In fact, 20 of NASCAR’S Greatest Drivers have driven for Wood Brothers Racing. That list includes Curtis Turner, Tiny Lund, Fireball Roberts, Bob Welborn, Dale Jarrett, A.J. Foyt, Glen Wood, Buddy Baker, Marvin Panch, Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough, Ned Jarrett, Fred Lorenzen, David Pearson, Joe Weatherly, Ralph Earnhardt, Neil Bonnett, Ricky Rudd, Mark Martin, and Bill Elliott.
Wood Brothers Racing scored their 98th victory, winning the 2011 Daytona 500 with rookie sensation, Trevor Bayne. Wood Brothers have now won in seven decades.
Wood Brothers Racing is headquartered in Harrisburg, North Carolina. Visit the team's website here.

Woods Brothers who, to my knowledge never worked on anything but Fords, pitted for
Jim Clark in a rear engine Lotus powered Ford in the 1965 Indy 500.

The car used knockoff hubs instead of traditional lug nuts.
The woods brothers had asked Ford to borrow some knockoff hubs and 3-spoke knockoffs to practice with.

When the Woods brothers returned the knockoffs to Ford, they were beat all to heck from practicing.
But......
In 1965 Jim Clark won the Indy 500 in a rear engine Lotus powered Ford.

Default INTERVIEW: Len Wood on the state of the 21

INTERVIEW: Len Wood on the state of the 21

69 sharessharetweetemail
By: Kelly Crandall | August 4, 2018 3:33 PM Wood Brothers Racing co-owner Len Wood says the way 2018 has gone so far this season has “exceeded where we expected to be.”
Wood Brothers hired Paul Menard as the next driver of the No. 21 when Ryan Blaney made the expected departure to go in-house with alliance partner Team Penske. Blaney left the team after putting them in victory lane for the first time in seven years at Pocono Raceway, which also qualified them for the playoffs. In two full seasons, Blaney earned one win, 23 top-10 finishes and seven top-five finishes.Low-key veteran Menard is now left to carry on the team’s success. Through the first 21 races, Menard has four top-10 finishes and will have to fight from below the cutoff line to make the playoffs. But in analyzing the numbers and comparing how Menard is doing versus Blaney’s previous seasons, Menard is not far off Blaney’s results in his first season with WBR, something Wood referenced during his conversation with RACER on Saturday morning at Watkins Glen:

Q: Now into August with the playoffs approaching, how do you feel the season has gone after making the driver swap?Len Wood: There has been a couple of races that we didn’t perform like we should have in the last three or four. We thought we had a good run going to try to get our way in points-wise in the playoffs. We’ve had some strong runs. Unfortunately, two of our speedway races ended in wrecks when we had really good cars, think we won a stage at Talladega. Second stage I believe it was.So, we’re right there on the line, just need a good run here. I think we finished fifth at the first Michigan if we can duplicate that … and then Darlington and Bristol are a little bit of a crapshoot for everybody with the traffic. Then the last race going in is Indianapolis, which is where Paul has his first win. Hopefully, we can transfer into the playoffs and then we’ll consider it a really good season because of that.

Q: So you’re staying optimistic that even though it’s a pretty big gap if you do your jobs, you’ll have a shot at it?LW: We’ve got a shot at it. We were 55 points behind [Alex] Bowman coming out of Kentucky I think it was, and didn’t have a real good Loudon and kind of lost part of that back. And then Bowman went and had a really good race at Pocono, he scored stage points and finished third I believe, so that kind of stepped him up a little bit. But we should be OK.”
Q: You mentioned exceeding where you thought you would be. What expectations did you come in with that you feel you’ve done that?LW: Well, we have a pretty much new team this year. I think that’s what a lot of people didn’t account, was we had a crew chief change and with that went to engineering stuff. Basically, Blaney’s group that we had last year, all the Penske employees or whatever, they moved with him, and we got new ones. So, we had a lot of new people. It’s kind of like starting over again. If you go back and look with us, we ran a partial schedule with Blaney and then a couple years with him full-time. So the first full-time year I wanted to be equal to that or better, and we are. There again, Blaney was being a rookie … it’s comparing different kinds of apples. Not apples to oranges, but a red apple to a yellow apple. You don’t want to set your expectations that we’re going to win five races, and then you don’t win any, and you’re all dejected. We set reasonable goals.

Q: Which was? Because I’m assuming you come in knowing what the team is capable of but you take into account the new group.LW: We knew Paul’s capabilities. For us, [on] the speedways we got a sixth at Daytona but the other two we didn’t get the finish to go with it. You’ve got to plan on some bad days. There again, I think we’re ahead of where we thought we would be.

Q: Last year during the announcement you mentioned Paul told you he would come in and race his butt off. Is he the driver you expected him to be?LW: Yeah. I think he’s done everything we asked him to do. If you look at the whole Ford group, one group is better than all the rest, and that’s made it a little more difficult for the rest of the Ford drivers…I don’t know how you want to put that.
Paul is the nicest guy you could talk to. He doesn’t get excited. We run calm races with him and Greg Erwin. One time in 20-something races has there been like, why are we doing this, where are you at? Basically a raised voice. One time. And I’m not saying Blaney, but some people could be 10 times a race. So, we run a much calmer race now, and I like that. Him and Greg are on the same wavelength on what the car needs.

A better example is qualifying. With Blaney the last couple years we would be fastest in one of the two rounds of qualifying, but not the third. And it was like six times we were one or the other, but not the right one. And once we figured out what he needed, then OK we got a pole at Kansas and Phoenix. Same with Paul. You get up there like almost going to do it and didn’t, and finally, at Chicago, we hit the right thing. Now, that doesn’t work every week, but it did that day. Which gives you confidence you can do it again. There again, it’s all in getting used to each other. It is very rare to find it where it all gels like you would want [right away]. What we’ve seen so far of Paul, we like his driving style. We just got to work harder and be smart in the races we run because Greg has done a good job of pit strategy.

Q: Overall everything is good and you’re happy?LW: We’re happy. But like I said, I’ll be happier if we make that playoffs. And I don’t want to stop at that — making the playoffs and oh that’s it. I think that is a goal I would like to achieve, but if we don’t, we’ll keep our head up and try to be 17th in the points.

Stock Car Racing NASCAR Glen Wood, 1925-2019
Glen Wood, 1925-2019

223 sharessharetweetemail
By: Kelly Crandall | January 18, 2019 6:00 AM Glen Wood, one of the founders of Wood Brothers Racing, passed away Friday morning at the age of 93.One of NASCAR’s longest-running teams, WBR was formed by Glen and younger brother Leonard Wood. The organization has 99 victories in the NASCAR Cup Series and has fielded cars for some of the sport’s legendary drivers like Junior Johnson, David Pearson, and Cale Yarborough.

Glen Wood earned four wins as the team’s driver at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from 1960-1963. Throughout 11 years, Wood made 62 career starts. He also had five wins in 89 starts in the Convertible Series.

By 1964 Wood was finished driving and his focused shifted toward WBR ownership. Glen and Leonard are credited with developing orchestrated pit stops. As an owner, Wood and his family won the Daytona 500 five times (Tiny Lund 1963), Cale Yarborough (’6, A.J. Foyt (’72), David Pearson (’76) and Trevor Bayne (’11).

Wood, who was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998, was inducted in the third class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012 (pictured, top).

“This is a difficult day for all of us at Ford Motor Company,” said Edsel B. Ford II. “Glen Wood was the founding patriarch of the oldest continuously operating NASCAR Cup Series team and we consider Wood Brothers Racing a part of our family, the Ford Family. The Wood Brothers race team, by any measure, has been one of the most successful racing operations in the history of NASCAR. Most importantly for our company, Glen and his family have remained loyal to Ford throughout their 69-year history.

“Glen was an innovator who, along with his family, changed the sport itself. But, more importantly, he was a true Southern gentleman who was quick with a smile and a handshake and he was a man of his word. I will cherish the memories of our chats in the NASCAR garage, at their race shop in Mooresville or the racing museum in Stuart. My most memorable moment with Glen was with he and his family in the No. 21 pit box watching Trevor Bayne win the 2011 Daytona 500 and the celebration that followed in victory lane.”

Ehh, idk maybe inventing the modern pit stop! Yeah, Like, Getting The car serviced fast THEY INVENTED THAT. Like, they were around before my girlfriend left me! OR when NASCAR was only a dirt series! YEAH. Story Time. Flashback to 1953 in the Ridge Mountains of West Virginia. There two workers at a log mill by the name of Glenn and Lee Wood. NOW THESE GUYS WERE OBSESSED WITH CARS! When they weren’t at the track they were ALWAYS chilling at their fathers garage. So naturally, when they were inspired by friend and mill

operator Curtis Turner (Who would later drive for them in BLANK BLANK) to start a Stockcar team, they went for it! Going for your dreams and succeeding! Like a fairytale right? WRONG! As a matter of fact, almost went up in smoke before it even started, LITTERALLY. Right after Glenn Wood's first race, the team was on their way home with the car on a tow truck, when the car had a brake issue and caught fire! With no water or fire department in miles the brothers had no choice but to watch the car burn to the ground. But with two weeks to go until the

next race the team came through, the show went on, and so did Glenn. Going on to win four races on the Daytona Beach Course and become one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest drivers. Another 19 of which would at one time or another go on to drive for the cause! We're talking drivers like... Dan Gurney Curtis Turner Marvin Panch Jr Johnson Speedy Thompson Fred Lorenzeth Cale Yarbororough Donnie Alison AJ. Foyt David Pearson Davey Allison Heu Stricklin Neil Bonnet Buddy Baker Bobby Rahal Kyle Petty Glenn Wood Back to the story, As the

demands of being a car owner were increasing Glenn Wood found himself having less and less time to drive. So they began searching for a replacement for the 64 season. Believe it or not they actually had a really tough time trying to find a driver. However, after some asking around they got Chris Williams to drive. They got quick, quick! It wasn't too long before they quit their jobs to build a shop in Stuart VA and work there full time. It was about this time they took up the notorious number 21. Now they were competing among the highest levels of

Grand National Racing! With the only competition in sight being the king himself! Fast Forward to 1965. So the Wood brothers had been killen it in NASCAR for ford in neck and neck with only the prestigious petty team pretty much everywhere. But they especially shined in one area PIT STOPS. That’s right, these guys invented the modern pit stop, not IndyCar, not F1 or le mans. BUT A FEW GUYS FROM THE MOUNTAINS IN NASCAR!!!! They were so good that when it came time for the great Colin Chapman to partner up with ford and bring the

first ever mid-engine racer the innovactious lotus 21 to Indy. These guys got the call to be the crew. And DEAR GOD did they answer it! When they arrived at the shop they we've well received but chapman was still a bit worried. Being quoted as saying "I hope they can pit faster than they talk." Did they? DAMN RIGHT THEY DID! When their Indy debut was said and done the lotus team set records spending only a record 41.9 seconds in the pits and setting an overall speed record of 150 mph with an unproven car and the first foreign win since 1916.

A Fired up Bill France Sr was herd screaming "That’s My Boys!" After their last stop. So, it was a pretty good day. But in the words of the great Billy Maze WAIT, THERES MORE! Now on to 1976 The Pearson years Imagine Chuck Norris partnering up with Bruce Lee. That’s what this was. But better. From day one it seemed as though the Pearson Wood combo was one for the books. Both scoring the first of 50 poles for the Woods and later the first of 43 wins! Including the first ever triple crown! Such events led the Brothers being invited to the

Whitehouse in 76! We'll have to do a whole video on this alone at some point. Now It's 1980 The next most notable jam of the Wood Brothers soundtrack of winnage came in 1980 when Neil Bonnet invented Draft Evasion at Pocono, (no not that kind). Basically, he'd move around a lot on the straights. Not to block, but to mess with the air so that no one could slingshot past him! It was freakin genius! This amazing and innovative technique led to a win over Buddy Baker by .06 seconds! And has been used at super speedways ever since. Onward to

Today. Since then the Wood brothers have claimed another 11 wins and have been credited with launching the careers of many great drivers. Such as Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip, and most recently Ryan Blaney in 2017 at the Daytona 500. Proving yet again that through the years the Wood Brothers had stood the test of time and to this day, they are not just a museum, but an active threat to win!
