Subwoofer help pleeeze!!!!!!!!
Hello folks! I'm a newcomer & need advice. I have an 87 Chevy K5, with a 60x2 pushing 10 assorted mids & highs. Also have a 260x2 pushing 2 kicker 12s in an enormous ported box, originally built to spec for 2 fosgate 12s. Well, over the years, the fosgates fell apart. Even held them together with shoegoo for almost 6 months! Eventually tho, there was nothing left to goo! So, i picked up a set of kicker subs. Really wish i knew more about'em. Bigass magnets & KICKER right in the center of the cone. I know, thats every sub ever made! Sorry. Anyway, combined with the huge ported box-they pound! But alas, I want more. How do i accomplish this on a budget of 4 or 5 bills? Pretty sure i have sufficient power. The punch amps never get past warm. Just don't know what's to come. I have these kickass 12s, so, ideally adding 2 more would no-doubt fill my needs. But i doubt i'll be able to match these subs exactly. What to do? Can i drop in 2 more, albeit different, subs in the same box? Should i seal it up? Build a different box for the other 12s? As big as my rig is, that'd be pushing the limit on space. Or, pull the subs & box, in favor of a new enclosure with a pair of 15s, or even 18s? Cost is a factor. I am also going crosseyed with specs & prices! I see a 12" or 15" sub, that costs say 100$. Then i see an identical looking sub (difrnt model#) that's 250$! I was a bit of a phile back in the day, & knew that a crappy sub, in a good box, being pushed by a quality amp, can be made to sound great. Life, kids & the usual have kept me outta the car stereo scene. Please tell me wutcha think! I need all the input i can get! Thanks.

No offense, but.......10 assorted mids and highs running off a single 60x2 amp? Yikes. That's already a red flag to me that you're probably not up to speed on car audio. I'm assuming your current equipment is pretty old. And the ported box you have is designed for a specific sub, therefore you cant just throw anything in there and expect it to sound good. Honestly, it sounds like you need to gut everything and start over....but 4-500 is not going to cut it unless you're using really low-end euipment.
Look into a single 12, something that calls for around 2-300w rms ($80)....and a class D amp to match ($200). Have a sealed box built to specs specifically for it ($100). If you don't already have an aftermarket deck (cd player)($175), I'd invest in that...something that does atleast 40w rms per channel...this way you can run your speakers off the deck instead of an external amp. Pick up atleast one pair of full-range speakers for the front ($80)...a rear set as well if you have the cash. Run those speakers off the aftermarket deck. Brands vary, but if you want to keep it simple as possible....you could go with all Alpine equipment. It's affordable, and readily available anywhere. You're looking at just under $700 probably for a full system overhaul.Last edited by TBSpyder; 02-12-2012 at 12:11 PM.

Sounds like the box probably isn't the right size which will make it not sound right. If you need any equipment pm me. I got really nice stuff.
