I know budget is usually an issue with your installs, but using fabric other than fleece is a real PITA. The reason fleece is most frequently used by professionals is because it is cheap, it flexes just enough without seeping, and it DOESN'T wrinkle like bed sheets (or whatever that is).
Check your local craft or fabric store. Fleece is only like $6 a roll.
That being said though it is definately not a "pretty" as the pink/purple flowery bed sheet you chose. Definately a first?!?

you can use a jig saw to cut a ring just big enough to fit around the speaker stack that on the speaker ring you already have and more or less flush them. looks pretty good so far. pick up some fiberglass matt or the filler type glass to add some strength instead of using more cloth its cheap and adds up to being real strong
looks pretty good so far, are you going to cover the whole door in some nice fabric or smooth and paint it?
i'd go with some padding over the whole door them some nice fabric of some sort

for the price of most felts you can order some suede knock off (via ebay or some other website) that feels and looks just like the real deal. i would suggest just basic black it's cleaner and you'll probably enjoy it for longer.
just make sure to add some like dash padding under the final fabric, makes it look and feel nicer. a buddy's sub enclosure i built we originally painted then he wanted covered in suede we just went back and added the padding, looks so much smoother and more plush. also for you it would add some damping to the doors and stop some rattles

As crazy as it sounds, this project is actually turning around a little. I think you are on the right track. Are you still going to fiberglass it and cover/smooth with body filler? That is going to take a while and a ton of sanding to get this smooth. I like the idea of covering it with faux suede or some other fabric. I think it may have a better chance of coming out acceptable...
1stGen7
09-17-2008, 11:06 PM

Well, your point in sanding the fiberglass portion is just to knock down the high spots and set up the general shape of the enclosure. Then the body filler (Bondo sucks by the way-use the pro stuff at the body shop supply stores) is used to apply a clean and smooth surface to lay the paint on. It is almost impossible to get fiberglass completely smooth and definately not worth the time trying! Body filler Body Filller BODY FILLER!

Another neat trick, that would probably work well on something shaped like this is to make 'soup' out of bondo and fiberglass resin. Actually, duraglas works best, but regular bondo will do.
All you do is mix up some bondo and hardner in one bowl, and some resin and hardner in another. I usually back off the respective hardeners a little, FWIW. Then, just start adding the resin to the bondo, until it is like thick gravy.
This stuff spreads easily, goes on thick, and sort of levels itself out. It also adds quite a bit of strength. You might still need more bondo after that, but it will save a lot of time. The soup is pretty hard to sand, once its fully cured though, so try and get it on as smooth as you can, and do your sanding early...when you hit it with a piece of 36 grit, it should sort of ball up, kind of like cheese.

I'm going to try to help you out with a couple tips that might make this project work out better. First, look at the top edge of the panel in the pic below. The part you made is so much higher than the existing panel you wont be able to get a smooth transition. There's not a good way to fix that when you've got this far, aside from grind it off. Second, the front edge of the pod is all zig-zaggy instead of being straight, again making an even transition almost impossible.
Here's how I would make a pod like this. Tape the door and draw out with a sharpie how much area you want the pod to cover. Draw just a tad smaller than where it will really go so the resin build up will fill it out. smear a thin layer of mold release wax(or just car wax works in a pinch) on the tape, and lay 2 layers of 1.5oz chop mat right onto the taped door. When it cures pop it off the door, and cut along your lines (carefully, make it straight). Now you have an exact fiberglass copy of the door panel. Now you can position your rings onto this fiberglass and wrap the whole thing with fleece very tightly. Soak it up good and lay a couple more layers of mat on it, and let it cure up well. I don't wrap the mat around the edges, to make sure the part sits nicely. I strengthen the point where the fleece meets the fiberglass by mixing some finely chopped fibers in some resin and pour it in around all the edges. It doesn't take much, just a little bead all around the joint. At this point the panel will be pretty smooth and just take a little minor filling. Hit it with your grinding disc to knock off all the high spots and rough it up a bit, and cover the part with a thin layer of filler. For non-painted parts whatever cheap filler you can find will work. For painted parts I use Rage Gold, which is 30$+ per can but works a ton better. Sand off with 180 or so on your DA and it's ready to be matched to the door and covered. All this could easily get done in one day for those pods, and will give you better results.

Yep thats where laziness set in... also rushing to get them working... I only had them in my car for about a week...
I used to have to roll down the window to open the door to get out...
But my car got broken into through the trunk and they couldnt steal anything in the interior cause they couldent open the doors...
they ended up stealing my ricer tail lights and a dinky bazoka amp... left my Aura 1500 watt mounted to the seat... that they nicely folded down...

Looking much better! One other tip i might give if you haven't laid resin on yet is to go along that top edge of the door in that last pic and smooth off all those little bumps. It will be much easier now than later, and each layer you lay on it will add to the bump quite a bit. The smoother the surface underneath is the better the final product will be.
OMG! Let's see this one to completion...

Are you sanding all this by hand or do you have a palm sander and air compressor (or at least an air 90 degree angle sander tool)? I know budget is always an issue in your builds but you are actually very close to a clean final product this time. If you use air and are very careful, you might be able to get just about all bumps out of this one. Finally a respectable start. Just keep up the good work and take your time. If you get stuck, take the time out to post questions here. You are probably not aware that there are some very respectable members in this industry that peruse this forum. This progression in your builds is what it's all about...

I read this whole thread,(never seen any other of your work their talking about) and man from start to now is such an improvement. Great job by not bailing on it just because of the negative comments you were receiving, what it seems you did was take all that in and made something positive out of it by learning about it more, that my friend is AWSOME, a lot of respect for that man. Keep it up and keep learning to improve. Looking like its coming out good so far. Will be tagging along to see the rest...
Keep it up man...

What's the point of that? Number one, I don't see that truck entering any races in the near future unless it's against a bicycle. Number two, that's gotta be the most uncomfortable seat out there. Number three, god rest anyone's soul who sits in that seat and gets into an accident after you've mounted it. Seems like that truck has more important things to be done to it than racing seats.

Looks pretty good. Get them covered and get some speakers in there. Don't stop here- this is the farthest you have gone. Finish it and install it and gain back some respect!

the wire is routed the same way the stock one was.. though the alt bracket.. not in the pic is the heater core hose witch also gos though the same spot i got it back in not.. the 0 gauge is behind the hose .. there is no way the fan could hit the ground wire
