What's the general consensus on installing a head unit in a newer Chevy model? The shops I've called have all been trying to sell me some $80-$100 unit for my truck. Some module to keep the door chime working, etc...
Is this for real? My truck is a WORK TRUCK model, no Onstar, no Power Windows, Locks or Mirrors, no Bose... NADA!
I bought a Double Din Kenwood DPX502, and wanna install it this weekend, but don't wanna blow an extra freaking hundred bucks to do eeeet... :crack:
Hook a ninja up, tell me this shit is ghey, and not necessary and I can get by with just the normal $25 worth of install kit/adapter/plug gimmick actions.............

You can do it with a cheap harness. I did it on my buddies truck. You will need to find your own ACC. wire though, I think I did a lil more too but not much.

Hrmmmm...
So what "ACC" wire would I need to find? And what for?
I'm a total electronics :dunce: - so help a brother out. I'm having another forum member help me with the install of the head unit, amp, cap, and subs. I bought the gear from him, except for the head unit, and want to be able to install it all...
I'm just not sure I can justify blowing another $100 on it, when I'm not even supposed to be spending money on my truck  The wife made me promise to wait until I bought her a house :crack:
You are supposed to use the GMOS module which is about $100. However, if you don't care about chimes, etc. Most shops don't know about this alternative because the book doesn't list it as an option but you can use another alternative wire harness. It includes and extra long wire that you have to shoot down to the steering column or the fuse box to catch your own accessory feed however. I have the harnesses in stock (we do alot of work for fleets like verizon and brighthouse that have work trucks and need cheap radios) and the install kit 99-2003 that you would need for the 2006 Silverado. Give me a call as you are not going to find this harness in Best Buy or any other local shop. Just know that your chimes and seatbelt minder dinger will be GONE!

I got the harness at Wal-mart for $2 at it worked fine haha, just extended my own wire. The ACC wire is the red wire coming from the HU. Look up alarm wiring diagram for your truck and it will tell you what wire under the dash is the ACC wire, tap into that.

Not sure which WalMart you found it at or how you got it for $2. They state it is special ordered and only sold online for $6.78.
MiDiablo, if you want it today, call me. If not, you could always do it the good old fashioned "backyard" way and cut off the old connectors for a manual splicing. I'll give you the printout while you are here so you know which accessory wire to hit at the steering colomn harness or the BCM below it...

MCOR do you have the dash kit, harness, and antenna adapter? What's the cost for these items?

It was from the Pinellas Park Wal-mart... maybe it was a little more but pretty sure it wasnt $7.... it was a Sunday and he wanted it in so I was like alright lets go to Wal-Mart... found 2 that I wasn't sure if they would work, bought both and returned one. It was one of their "super universal" ones lol.

Anyone that can confirm or deny that the only negative effect of not using the module is the loss of seatbelt dinger and door chime? What about "fuel low" and "door open" or "lights still on when you got out of the truck idiot" and whatever other "beeps" the truck makes??

Bought the standard double din dash kit, bought the standard GM Wiring Harness - which came equipped with the additional wire to run for the "accessory" to loop in replacement of the GM Module...
Avoided having to buy that $100 GM Module...
Installed all of the stereo today, and it's working PERFECT-O! No door chimes, no seat belt chimes (SWEET might I add), and, the kicker - everyone that was saying that this GM Module effects the Air Bags - were WRONG... Airbags work fine, as the passenger airbag in my vehicle is only turned on when there is weight in the passenger seat over 50#'s, and as soon as I put a passenger on the seat the airbag came on!
So good news for me, and for anyone else conisdering doing this :D
