Checking DC voltage, AC voltage, Ohm loads. Mainly only good for troubleshooting. Can be used to set gains as well.

Sears has a sale on a nice DMM that also measures wattage and has AC line detection without using the conductors.
I think its running for $50 regular $79.
The only DMMs I would avoid are walmart cheapo more because they don't have overload protection(if you set if to 12v and connected toi a 24v source it would damage it) and some of them are only accurate to .5v which is horrible.. you want at least .1v accuracy, .05 is ideal.

eh i bought mine at home depot... works for what i use it for now...
DMM can be used in alarm installation (we use logic probes for speed however). It will help you verify you have the right wire that the wiring chart instructs you to connect to. A good one will measure amperage load (usually up to 20 amps) to verify if a component is drawing too much amperage like linear actuators or door lock actuators). You mainly trouble shoot with it however and can verify a grounded out wire, voltage drop on a ground or power wire under load, speaker wires shorted out, speaker windings shorted out, verify you wired all speakers correctly by checking ohmage at the connection before hooking them to an amp to blow it. Good for checking to see that you got the reverse wire when connecting navigation, verifying that you have the vehicle speed sensor wire for navigation leads (AC voltage will increase with vehicle speed). Check for blown fuses without removing them from the box.
A decent site used to be www.the12volt.com (http://www.the12volt.com). It has been many years however since I have visited it. Most DMM training comes through audio installation courses however put on by the manufacturers (Directed's Snake Pit, some local vo-tech schools, etc).
