Gas Mileage Savings Calculator: Car Cost vs. Fuel Savings (http://edmunds.com/calculators/gas-guzzler.html)

for me going from a 97 Crown Vic to a 08 jetta 2.5L driving 300 miles a month

Amount Saved on Gas (per month): $15.16
Number of months to breakeven and begin saving money on gas: 1,064

You don't drive that much
For me going from a 02 durango to a 05 jetta tdi

Amount Saved on Gas (per month): $158.19
Number of months to breakeven and begin saving money on gas: 116

and that's not trading the durango in

Trading it in:
Amount Saved on Gas (per month): $158.19
Number of months to breakeven and begin saving money on gas: 85

So I didn't trade it in, payment is 170 and I like it.

aren't even taking into consideration any insurance changes or repairs to an older vehicle?

I traded the STi because :

uses cheaper gas
gets double the FE
cheaper insurance
cheaper payment.

I'm saving over $200 a month with the civic. Their calulator is borked.

A major factor in my decision to buy an (almost) new vehicle was greater reliablity and less money and time spent on repairs.

Ultimately, unless you drive a LOT of miles, you'll almost always spend less money keeping an old car. But, you have to factor in the inconvenience of it breaking down on you and if you're not a do-it-yourselfer, you have to factor in the cost of repairs... even if you are a do-it-yourselfer, do you want to spend your spare time fixing your daily driver? And the repair parts don't come free.

There's more to it than just gas savings.

But, if you're only driving 300 miles per month... just enjoy driving what you have.

OMG IT'S A COP
