i saw on the internet the other day conversion kits to make your car half hydrogen half gas for anywhere from $150-650 it said it would garauntee at least a 40% increase in fuel efficiency. is this just a scam? has anyone tried these and do they work?

i'm betting scam.

all of the "run your car on water" devices are a complete scam. You'll use more energy in the electrolysis obtaining hydrogen and oxygen than you can generate back in the combustion of both of them. Its just chemistry and physics.

Pretty Much all of these have been Debunked.. there are some that use chemical mixes and modify the 02 sensor voltages which i think if any gain it's being found from running the car lean.

What DOES work?

A working Natural Gas Bi-fuel conversion costs $2000 in parts alone. and it's a 10 hour install, so your looking at near $3000 to use $0.70 a gallon... and you still need to get a compressor to fuel it from your home gas line ($1000)

but .70 a gallon and Greatly reduced emissions you can pay for the $3800 investment in 2-3 years based on your driving and it's 100% switchable to gasoline

E85 conversions are the most cost effective to do. they are simple and proven. and come in 3 methods.

1: Full time conversion. (up rate your injectors ~20% Cheap, effective. and the car runs like stock) (about $250)

2. Pulse Width Modulation, Switchable, installation is a plug in afair. most kits are <$400

3. fuel Pressure Modification.. for cars that run rich already you might be able to bump the fuel pressure this is the cheapest ~100 is somewhat switchable andinstallation is a non-affair.

The problem with E85 is the economies of scale have not been applied to it's production fully. and you can only expect to save ~20%-30% off a gallon of gas, and you'll wind up burning most of that in lost fuel mileage. this is only important to those who care about Emissions and What the fuel does to our economy. since it's shifts a lot of the energy use from imported oil to natural gas. That being said a well tuned turbocharged car canl only see losses of 5-7% since the charge cooling and high octane can be used to make more power and therefore use less fuel.

Methanol.. same as above. except add $200 for a methanol compatible fuel pump and assorted lines. and methanol is not cheap...

Propane: unless you have a carbureted car, the conversion is almost the same as CNG and at $3 a GGE equalivant, it's a no-go. but if you have an old CAR YOU CAN DO IT CHEAP.
