i drifted that thing so hard today. it was a different style one. 3 runs, each 3 laps.... very awesome with the long 2min + run times. the rain was so nice to let up for my runs, the slick surface was no match for the sohc 240.... even tho i didnt do any serious runs i beat 3 people overall... hehe. im sure people appreciate my drift just as much as the FTD run by Loren....(ok maybe a lil less?)
The Bettle was in Virgin class, not in street novice. He said it was his 1st autoX.

No offense to the rest of the Miata club, but Loren is just that much better of a driver.

Your first run was pretty impressive. Very controlled and "pretty" drifting. You got pretty scary coming toward the finish area a couple times after that. But thanks for not taking out a bunch of cones!
Honestly, I was pretty impressed with your control and the way your car allows you to drift. The fact that nobody jumped your shit in 9 laps indicates that I'm not the only one who recognized that you were mostly in control in spite of your tail-wagging.

He checked the "less than 6 autocrosses" rather than the "first time" box on his entry form. That puts him in Novice.
I tried to discourage first timers from running this event, he told me he'd done the Mazda Rev It Up thing. So, it may have been his first "regular autocross", but not his first experience.
Be that as it may, I was amazed with his times! Awesome.
And the kid in the Talon, too. Wow!

Yes, "hot laps", in the rain, in the dark, with the A/C on to keep the windshield clear.
Got a problem with it? Got something more useful to say? Don't be a fuckin' twit.
(My apologies to anyone who is easily offended. Mods feel free to delete this useless tangent.)

Thanks, dude. My "zen wisdom" for this event was simply to make a concerted effort to stay in control at all times. On my final run, I was smooth and consistent and got exactly one tail wiggle in those three laps. Overdriving gets you nowhere. It's hard not to overdrive in the rain, especially on sealed asphalt.
Another thing that the results don't show. On my second and third runs, I intentionally hit the first slalom cone (it was kinda hard to get over to get around it, disrupted my line, pissed me off, had to go) several times. This being a multi-lap course (the original idea was to do FIVE or more laps), I didn't want people botching a good run for just hitting a cone or two, so we allowed "three for free". I was running clean (as were most people), so I used my free cones to my advantage.
So, the cone penalties you see in the results, every "0" could be as many as "3", and any actual penalties means that the driver hit more than 3 cones. (I don't remember anyone actually doing that... I made a pretty wide course due to the rain)
Oh, and my first run time includes a coneless spin at the end of the slalom on my last lap. :)
BTW, the course map is still on the website: http://www.sunridersautocross.com
I really stuck with that design as closely as possible. Lots more pointers were used (mostly rows of 4 pointers marking the outsides of wide turns) because we couldn't use a chalk line. The slalom went from a 4-cone to a 6-cone because the speed coming around the turn after the slalom was scary coming toward that light pole in the rain. The apex after the last slalom cone was also removed to effectively bring that sweeper inward away from the pole. Otherwise, WYSIWYG, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Okay, I took the time to review your 13 previous posts, Mr. Junior Member. From that, I will concede that you are not the twit that I assumed you were from your post above. You tend to ask legitimate questions and sometimes state a short but reasonable opinion. Not what I was expecting your other posts to be given the BS above.
I apologize for taking your post the wrong way. (not sure what the right way is, but willing to let it go as I should have last night)
Now, seriously... do you have something to contribute to this thread?

Man no offense but who has the time to go read posts to see if soemone is legit. Take the comment as a joke, that what is was intended as. If something makes you mad, well just let it go. I know mofugga pretty good. He is a damn fine driver and me and him have attended many sunriders events. Actually most of the time comming in high up. Top 5 to 10. The joke is that the location is small, and its FUNNY to think of hotlapping there. GET IT! HAHAHAHAHA. :D

Okay, y'all can let this go now. I already apologized for flying off the handle. We all get pissy from time to time... some more than others.

You guys are the ones that aren't getting it. By designing a faster and better flowing course on that small site, you end up with a very short course. (had it not been wet, this course would have been 30-35 seconds) The only way to really make a decent autocross run out of that IS to do hot laps.
Think about it.

Loren my friend. We understand that concept. It was a joke. Jokes are not to be taken as literal, for instance we are not poking fun at you or Sunriders. It was just funny to think of watching a bunch of cars drive around on that small site. You know it might LOOK funny. Not to say it wasn't fun, or that it wasn't a great track, just funny to PICTURE in everyones IMAGINATION an autox with hotlaps on a small patch of pavement. So from now on me and my brother will not make jokes as aparently they are not understood in context. :(

Airwolf is so much cooler than Knight Rider. BTW KARR was the better of the 2 Knight Prototype vechicles.

I get it, I guess. Just didn't strike me as funny. Now, the parade lap we did at the Minis/Miatas event with over a dozen Minis circling the course bumper-to-bumper at the same time... that was kinda funny to watch.

Where the hell did that :asshole: come from.
I've never seen that before. Didn't even like those smiley things until now. Of course I'm working on my third beer after just getting back from Peurto Rico where the whole damn island is an autocross - no cones just lots of other cars to avoid - they keep trying to kill me when I'm there. Nice people, but DAMN they CAN'T drive :madfawk:
So whose going to Lakeland this weekend - I think it'll be my SCCA debut

I'm on a mission to find the cords on my rear tires. If it doesn't rain I should see 'em by Sunday afternoon.

man...first sunriders autox I've missed since moving from orlando, and it's 3 laps in the rain on sealcoat :(
I really didn't have the $50 or so it would've cost to run though (probably wouldn't even have been able to make it if it was the usual $30)
...so how about doing a more gymkana like course next time? :)

If one of our esteemed club members wants to volunteer to be an event chairman and do that kind of course, we could do it.
That's the cool thing about being an event chairman, you get to impart some of your own character to the event and/or the course.

So what's the differance in what we've had and a gymkana type course. I've been starting to think about what my events course will look like - By the way Loren, do we have a site map of the pad without any course layout already on it. Might not be a bad thing to post to the web site.

He's talking about the variant of autocross that they're calling gymkhana in Japan these days. I'm not sure how they score them, there must be some judging other than time... if they even consider time. It's sort of a mini "drifting" competition from the videos I've seen. The course includes pivot cones (you do a loop around the cone), figure-eights (you do an 8 around two cones), wide sweeping turns to drift through, exaggerated offset slaloms that you really can't get around without hanging the tail out and things of that sort. It's all about controlled oversteer. Not sure how our regulars would take it.
As for the site map, I'll send you the usual event chairman info. I have a map, but it's not scaled properly. Bill took some actual measurements last week, so when I get that info back from him, I'll revamp the map and put a copy on the website.

hehe...I'd love to try and design something, I think most people wouldn't like it very much though. As far as I know gymkana is scored by time, but the course is set up in such a way that the fast line is too tight to drive without drifting. Such a thing would probably be more suited to a somewhat 'experimental' event, like the night-time hotlapping (btw, bring back the hotlapping for a month where I'm not dirt poor)....or introduce it slowly with a spin cone here or there
Is there a sunriders autox this month? I looked at the calendar, but didn't see one scheduled until september.

Having a "gymkhana" or "drifting" style element in a course would probably go over better than doing an entire course that way. Not that it wouldn't be fun, just that it's such a departure from what we're used to. After everyone left last Saturday (while waiting on AAA to come let someone into their car that Dan locked the keys in!), I went out and goofed off in the wet parking lot. I can tell you, when you've spent years teaching yourself to be in control, it's difficult to force yourself to let the car get out of control! Likewise, when your car is set up to keep the back end planted in a turn, it's hard to get it to drift with any degree of finesse.
Give me your financial schedule for next year and I'll be sure to consider it when we do our events schedule! :)
Is there a sunriders autox this month? I looked at the calendar, but didn't see one scheduled until september.
That is correct, nothing until September. Here's how that happened:
The small group of folks who have been running the SunRiders show for the past few years didn't want to be stuck out in the heat setting up and tearing down these events with little help in the middle of the summer. So they didn't schedule any events during the summer months.
The new Autocross club and a renewed effort to get people involved in helping with the events rather than just competing in them has shown lots of promise, and we may have a more complete schedule next year. It all depends on how many of our new members decide to chair events next year.

That makes sense...the June autox was hot enough for me...maybe try doing the summer schedule at night next season? I wish I could tell you what my financial schedule is for next year, I don't even know if I'll still be in the area though....I am employed until the end of september, so I should be able to make it to the next one. After that.....who knows
