Well, if you're Matt, David or James, someone checked the "first time" box on your form, which puts you in the "virgin" class.

Or did you mean you should have been in the virgin class and weren't? Then the opposite applies.

Glad you had fun. I think everyone enjoyed the course.

Yeah, that was probably it's major issue. I'm really starting to hate that site. It's just too small.

OH, and I joined the club today ;)

I knew that. :)

Thanks! You'll be all set for the members-only June event.

Oh and some slipped in an extra time that I didnt do, I dunno how that happened I only got 6 runs in because my battary came loose in the back.

I just looked again, none of the "autocross experience" boxes were checked. No biggie. I put you in Street Tire Novice by default. The only real fun of the "Virgin" class is if you win it, anyway!

So, you're saying that your last time of 50.whatever wasn't yours? Or is it one of the other times you aren't claiming. No big deal either way, but I'll fix it if you can tell me what to fix.

Gotta say, it's awesome to see young people out autocrossing! (even if you do make me feel old) I wish I'd have known about this sport when I was your age. Instead, I learned most of my driving lessons the hard way. Seven accidents between ages 16 and 19, totalled two cars.

Look me up at the next event, I'll do what I can to help you learn.

I'll take partial credit for that incident for setting up the finish the way I did. (it was goofy as was mentioned) But the finish was completely straight! I made sure of that. The only iffy part was the length of the braking zone... and only if you were dumb enough to stay on the gas beyond the lights, which were well marked this time. (only one person blew through the cones at the end of the braking zone, and not by much)

I didn't see you hit the lights. How the hell did you do that?

Note to self: Gotta start designing completely idiot-proof finishes again... even if it takes away from the rest of the course.

We don't have solid plans as of yet, but some of us are trying to put together some sort of a BBQ thing. We have the site from 1-10pm, so we're thinking of starting setup around 1-2pm, get everything ready to go by 4pm, then do a little BBQ, chill out and eat for a while and start autocrossing aroung 6pm.

Keep your eyes on the website for details as it comes together.

Yeah, but our timing equipment can't take that kind of abuse! I think we were lucky to only experience a few minutes of delay from the finish light getting hit twice yesterday. Even more lucky that we didn't completely destroy the photo head (though I heard the case was cracked) or damage any cables.

Haha, yeah no the 50. was mine, it was one of the ones in the middle no biggy. But it was worth the 30 bucks to get 7 runs in! I wish I could of stayed longer to help break down and stuffs but I still had finals. Anyways I might join so i can do the night time course and get more seat time! ill take you up on the offer to help next time I see you.

Taka (and anyone else),

The June event is only open to members of the SunRiders Autocross Club.

Yes, you can join the club that day. Membership is $20/year and the entry fee will be $25.

I had a blast!

Two thoughts:

1. Much more open finish areas (which Loren has already acknowledged)

2. Fun runs! (even if I'm just being idealistic)

Correction for Leslie, you and I are the timing light killers. :)

Fun Runs can be a major hassle, but they can also be a lot of fun. I don't mind if an event chairman wants to take responsibility for them. The way to make it work is to decide that you're going to do them early, and then get people to commit to it during the lunch break. If you have enough people who want to do it AND they're willing to stick around and help clean up afterwards, that's great.

The problems creep up when the decision to do Fun Runs is made at the last minute and not very many people stick around for them. Weather is a factor! If it looks like it's going to rain, or if it's extremely hot, or if it's already late, or anything else that might make people more likely to opt to bail out... Fun Runs become a bad idea. That is... unless you don't mind picking up the whole course by yourself.

But, WTF... is 7 runs not enough??? The autocross norm is 4 runs... sometimes 3.

What I'd like to see is enough cars to break into 3 run groups. We had 32 this time, that's getting close. We need at least 36 to give us 3 groups of 12. (we need 12 to ensure enough workers) Then everyone will get one run group to sit out and watch or ride with other drivers or whatever.

Loren,

7 runs *is* great!

In retrospect, one could just consider his/her last so many runs to be "fun runs" and there'd be no real difference, just giving up a few of your runs that could count towards your fastest time. I guess in a way it's just psychological.

The idea of 3 run groups is certainly interesting...

Did anyone notice all those DNF's? 11 of 'em! That seems like a high number, perhaps something in the course layout should be reconsidered?

That's not too bad, really. I didn't see where they all were, but it's easy to get a DNF in a slalom. And at least two of what appears in the results as "DNF" were runs that the time sheet said something about a timer problem and had no time (why they didn't get a rerun, I don't know). The most appropriate choice in my database for that is "DNF".

So, there were only 8 or 9 DNF's out of 224 runs.

You can probably count one or both of the finish timer hits, too. They probably got marked as DNF's.

Nah, it's not bad.

Yep, that was mine, I took your suggestion on trying 2nd gear then blew it :D The flaw was in the execution :D

Turns out my suggestion was flawed, too! I didn't try it until my last run, but staying in first through the whole course netted my best time. (beat the hell out of the rev limiter in a couple places, though!)

Of course, if you were bobbling the car around by being on-and-off the gas in first, it still may have helped you to smooth it out by being in 2nd.
