Hmmm... I guess I'll be there.

FYI, I've seen the preliminary course design, and it's going to be a lot faster than the last few SunRiders courses. It still has some tight and twisty bits in it, but it's definitely got some deep 2nd gear meat to it.

I don't know that hoosier autox compound would do all that well at a trials... too much heat... I suspect the road race compound would be more appropriate.

the guys at the runoffs run the autocross compound;)

What is this crap about the car not being setup.... Thats such a dumb excuse. I drove to Kasas in a way underprepped STS car. frickin DRIVE. dont make excuses.

The usual SunRiders autocross site: St. Pete Junior College.

It's at 3200 34th Street South in St. Pete. To get there, you'll actually need to turn in on 32nd or 36th Avenue to get back to the entrance on 32nd Street. (this will make sense if you look at a map)

despite the fact that leonard is correct, i will still be attending the local event. given my schedule at this point, i'm going to take the easy route and drive 10 minutes rather than 2 hours.

however, this summer i will DEFINITELY be attending almost every gainesville/ft myers event. mark my words leonard...and i'll have hoosiers soon...

Loren

Here's a preview of the course. There will be a few more cones here and there and some minor tweaks, but this is the basic line we're looking to achieve.

Saturday (for the Minis/Miatas event) we'll be running this course starting on the East side. Sunday we'll run the same course in the opposite direction starting from the West side.

1. This isn't a normal gainesville event.... it's solo trials... much more fun than solo 2. We only get one of these a year... :(

2. There will be no summer gainesville events. One in early may and one in november (i think... and i'm pretty sure that's all don't feel like getting out my tentative calendar...) . That's it. The point is... don't take it for granted that there is a gainesville event.... SunRiders runs EVERY month. It doesn't look like gainesville will be an event site nearly as frequently as it has been in the past. We're still hoping to do more there than sebring (1 event each year), but I wouldn't count on more than 4 weekends a year....

Hmm, G-holding contest. You DO need to get in behind the "slalom" at the bottom of the course to get a good time. Other than that though, late apex stuff and hope your tires are stickier than the rest of the guys there.

SunRiders autocrosses are now $30 for non-members, $25 for members. You can join the SunRiders Autocross Club for $20/year and get the member discount.

Chet,

How is this even any sort of a dillema???? Two days of hotlaps!!! (3 laps at a time possibly more)... Potential for triple digit speeds.

OR, 3 runs around a parking lot?

Oh, and just to put it the rest of the way in perspective... I'm bringing spare rotors and pads and fluid just in case....

I like to go fast as much as anyone else, but 85 mph in a stock car is not "Solo II". Somebody goofed.

Both cases are way faster than Solo II should be. Read the Solo II rule book. Speeds for "the fastest" Stock and Street Prepared cars should not normally exceed normal highway speeds. The fastest Stock and SP cars are blindingly fast cars and those speeds should only be achievable with the stickiest of autocross rubber.

But, hey, I wasn't there. If they can get away with that kind of speed for a short period on an isolated part of the course without creating a safety issue, more power to 'em.

Well, remember that SunRiders autocrosses are usually very small, it's hard to have proper classing with a group of only 30-40 drivers... you end up with two people in each class, and what's the point? Also remember that SunRiders autocrosses are more about fun than competition.

We have actually simplified our classing for this season. You'll probably like it even less, but I think it will work for our purposes.

Classes are:
Virgin (first timer)
Street Tire Novice
Street Tire Experienced
Race Tire Novice
Race Tire Experienced

These classes key on the two Most Important Things in autocrossing: Driver and Tires.

More often than not, at a casual autocross like ours, a good driver on good street tires can beat many "faster" cars with better tires. Remember, it's a driver's game!

He drives a Street Mod Mustang, and the course was deemed safe by at least 2 saftey stewards. You were going straight, nothing to hit, no reason to even come close to losing control.

FWIW, I was shifting to 4th right before the lights in my E-stock car.:) Thats about ~72 on the speedo.

Last year's SE Divisonal in Savannah saw 75mph through the lights of STS cars. The prepared and mod cars were going quite a bit faster im sure.

The First PRO event in Talladega had S2000s nudging the rev limiter in 3rd, thats ~90mph.

All of those events had ZERO accidents caused by the high speed. On the other hand, the Ft. Myers ProSolo this past weekend had 3 accidents, while top speed was limited to ~70mph by the SS cars.

When I ran with the Martin Sports Car Club up in G-Ville, car's were flying down that long backstraight. it was set up so the cars went all the way down the straight, then did a little rectangular loop on that box. my car got up into the 70's range on it.

but anyway, i really want to go to the sunriders event tommorrow. but i get off work at 7am in cocoa beach and it's like 3 hours to tampa. so something tells me i won't make it on time. plus i dont want to drive on unfamiliar terrain after working 11 hours straight and driving 3 hours to tampa. that's just asking for trouble.

oh well, maybe next time.

Oh, please don't do that! And if you do, don't bitch when we tell you that registration is closed and turn you away.

I just spent 11 hours at an autocross. Most of that time was spent working the event. It's generally thankless work. I'm not complaining, but if you're not going to do anything else to help, PLEASE show up on time for registration.

(sorry for the rant, it's been a long hot day... another one tomorrow)

The morning was WONDERFUL Saturday, absolutely perfect. Good cloud cover, temp around 70ish, light breeze, no rain. But we didn't actually start the event until 1pm (the Mini crew didn't want to show up early, so we scheduled registration to be from 11am-12pm) The sun started peeking out around 2pm and it got hot REAL quick.

But that's why we live in Florida, right? I'll take hot over cold any day.

Well, compared to the eternal damnation of living in Kansas for 15 years (I still don't know why I didn't leave sooner), it's still better here. In July and August in KS, it gets EVEN HOTTER than it does here. Ever tried autocrossing in 107 degree weather with a constant 35mph wind sand-blasting you and blowing over your cones?

Moving cones does add an interesting element to the sport, however. ;)

that course was badass i had alot of fun...alot faster and wider than the usual courses at sunriders. I managed a 44.9 which i thought was pretty good considering im still stock suspension and my tire pressure sucked.

good day overall though
