View Full Version : How many autocrossers?
Loren

All this talk about driving to Ft. Myers has me wondering... just how many active autocrossers are present on this forum? As an autocross organizer in the area, this information is very relevant to me.
Was going to do a poll, but an "add a poll" button didn't slap me in the face when I looked for it. (feel free to slap me in the face with it if it was obvious and I missed it)
Do you autocross?
How often?
How far will you travel?
How much will you pay to enter?
Serious competition or just fun?
Anything other comments?

My own answers:
Do you autocross?
Yep!
How often?
1-2x per month.
How far will you travel?
Up to 60-90 minutes.
How much will you pay to enter?
$15-20, more if lunch is included or for something special.
Serious competition or just fun?
Casual competition among friends, mostly fun and self-improvement.
Anything other comments?
Did I write that question? English really is my first (only) language.
My own answers:
Do you autocross?
Yes
How often?
As Often as Possible, usually once a month...sometimes twice a month
How far will you travel?
Up to 2 hours.
How much will you pay to enter?
$30 at most.
Serious competition or just fun?
I dislike losing, so basically i'm not having that much fun yet. When and if i ever start winning events consistently, then i'll be having fun. Until then, i will continue to go home unhappy.

Chet's not going to be a happy camper for a while then. Neal & Katie's new SM car is nearly ready. I saw it ~ 2-3 weeks ago.

I don't think there's been one at the fairgrounds since I moved here in August. (or at least not since I got A JOB after I moved) When will the next one be at that location?
Those are the ones I'm likely to attend if I can get away with it. Sunriders are keeping me pretty busy lately. As long as I get at least one fix per month, I'm usually okay. Convulsions don't set in until about two months. :)
I've gotten around a little, though. In the short time I've been here, I've attended a Sunriders driver's school (police instructors), two Sunriders autocrosses, one GCAC Saturday session, one Z-hills PCA event and another Miata club's "funcanna" in Ocala.

FSF events don't normally start until march or april. As I'm sure you're aware, the State Fair is there right now. Essentially, they don't want to give us the parking lots we use during their busy season... understandable all in all, although I think an autox would make a great exhibition at the fair... hmm.. that's actually a good idea... might have to run that past a few people...
We've had a bunch of events at Gainesville Raceway and you've missed every one of them.. :( It really is a tremendous site and hopefully we'll be having more events there soon. There's a Solo Trials scheduled in early march (8-9). I'm hoping to go to that, but we'll see. That will be 4 straight events for me (GCA, Nat Tour, Pro Solo, Solo Trials) and I think I'd be beat for a while after that. Hopefully we'll see some good news about the future of the Gainesville site. The meeting with the new solo 2 steward is today (actually, i have to leave for it in about an hour ) I think we just need to convince the RE that Gainesville is still capable of breaking even at the very least. That's just a matter of better planning on our part to make sure people know well in advance when the event will be happening.

Bad idea unless you have LOTS of community support. Crowd control would be horrendous, you'd need cops, serious barricades, bleachers for the spectators, etc. It could be done, but it would be a disaster without proper planning. And unfortunately, with the exception of classes like BP, CP and EM (and maybe SM2), autocross just isn't very entertaining for the casual "fan" to watch. No exciting wheel-to-wheel, no passing, no awesome crashes, etc.

Gville is in the same category as Ft. Myers for me. A solid two hour drive for an autocross. I still may do it, since I'm getting connected with people in this area who might be going. A road trip like that is always more fun when you have someone going with you.
My other option is to arrange a visit with my Dad in Ocala to coincide with a GIR event. I may try to do that as well.
leonard, have i been to an event with neal before?
or would i recognize them...or their car...and what is it?
until i get hoosiers and more experience i'll still be several seconds behind the best drivers.

Thats true. Usually each time we all go to an auto-x very far away we make a caravan out of it. When you are going 20-50 MPH over the speed limit there is strength in numbers.
Instead of speeding it becomes moving with the flow of traffic. :D
Do you autocross?

How far will you travel?

Do you autocross? YES
How often? AS often as I can afford tires to do so
How far will you travel? I drove to Kansas for Nationals...
How much will you pay to enter? I just paid 85 for the PRO event in Alabama, but dont you dare think that I'll pay that for a local;)
Serious competition or just fun? I like the competition, and I do run the National events, but the reason why I'm in the sport is because it's fun.
Loren, If youre in the Tampa area, I'd suggest making the trek down to Ft. Myers at least once. I know its a bit more than 90 mns, but it's WORTH IT. Its within the top 3 surfaces in the entire country, and the courses really teach you a lot....and there's a lot of cool people who run almost exclusively down there.

I did run down to Ft. Myers once. I did enjoy it, the drive was just a bit much. The surface is nice, but nowhere near as good as what we had at McConnell AFB in Wichita (when they let us run there -- pre 9/11). The difference between "retired" WWII concrete and "active" military taxiway concrete is astounding.

Very true...although, i have bad memories of Witchita. I made it to there Friday night after the Trophy dinner at Nationals. The next morning, I made it 90 miles past Oklahoma City when I wreck....oh well. C'est le vie.
Do you autocross?
Yup
How often?
Usually try for once/twice a month
How far will you travel?
2hrs max and it better be worth it (ie: Gainesville)
How much will you pay to enter?
$30 if run count is high and the course is good
Serious competition or just fun?
Fun
Haven't been out in a little while mainly due to my crazy schedule lately but I'm hoping all this will clear up soon. Got a whole new setup and class to try out this year. :D :D

As often as my wallet and schedule allows.
I raced about 5 or 6 times last year alone.
How far will you travel?
2 hours max...I've raced as far away as G'Ville, Z-Hills and Palm Bay.
How much will you pay to enter?
No more than $30 bucks
Serious competition or just fun?
Mostly for fun, I hope to be more competitive though. "cause winning would be even more fun.

Lots of mention of "winning" and the relative importance people place on it. I guess winning is okay, but only if you had true competition. Anyone who's "won" against feeble competition when their own driving wasn't up to par knows what I'm talking about.
To me, the most fun comes from friendly rivalries. Doesn't matter whether any of your group of rivals "wins" overall. All that matters is that you were able to have a little fun talking some shit before, during and after... and if you're lucky, you get the last word... until next time.
This is what makes season championships so much fun. The trophy itself isn't relevant, it's fighting for it among your friends. That is the glory of competition as I see it.
Of course, autocrossing just for the joy of pushing your car to the limit is fun, too.

I can when I can and go as far as I can. Unfortunately work keeps me pretty busy and mobile. I just have fun going out and hanging out with friends and running the cars. Cost all depends on the quality of the event and how bad I am jonesing for a run.

How much is SCCA membership? I've only been to one auto-x so far. $30 wouldn't be bad.. I suppose.. for once a month.
Edit: Blah.. $55/year for SCCA.. That's not bad. I don't know how much it is to run in the Auto-x's if you're an SCCA member though. I'll prolly find that in a few minutes though.

Mostly, yes. Are you a weekend worker? The Sunriders club will probably have a night autocross in June that you might be able to make.
Or, if you're up for a short drive in September, you could go to the SCCA Solo II Nationals in Topeka, Kansas. They run during the week. :)
If there is enough interest, and someone who's willing to step up and chair the event, we could try do an event on one of the Monday holidays. Memorial Day or or Veterans Day or something.

Yeah, I'm a weekend worker. 12 hour days Sat Sun, and 8 hour days Thurs Fri. My weekends are shot, because I get home at 7:30 at the earliest, and have to be back downtown at 7am.
So how much does it cost if you're a member?

For a regular SunRiders Autocross, the entry fee is $25 for members or $30 for non-members.
