2.2 16V Spirit R/T

Stock turbo
Stock IC
Pep Boys cone intake filter
3" exhaust with no cat and Race Magnum muffler
+40 injectors (52 lb/hr or about 550 cc/min)
93 octane pump gas
All runs in 3rd gear

23 psi boost on the low end, with a drop to 14.5 psi after hitting peak boost-

http://mysite.verizon.net/res1elpe/14-5%20psi-3rd%20gear.gif

The turbo just refused to move enough air to keep the boost any higher than 14.5 psi up top. Ive come to the conclusion that it just isnt capable of doing it. I had the wastegate actuator arm so tight I could barely pull it over the flapper pin.

When that didnt work, I applied 20 in Hg of VACUUM on the wastegate can, as well as having the super tight wastegate arm, while under boost. (I pilfered a vacuum cannister (thanks John and Taylor!) and check valve from a VTEC car and put it between my manifold source and the wastegate can. Thus, as soon as the car was started, the can goes to engine vacuum, the check valve closes and keeps the vaccuum on the can which then works with the wastegate can spring in trying to keep the dang flapper shut.) This setup still failed to produce any more boost up top and gave the same power numbers.

I also tried to make a run in 4th gear, and by 3100 rpm was making 340+ w ft lb of torque and the clutch turned to a acrid goo and the car hopped on the dyno. The car sure felt good right before the clutch let go though.

We also had some excitement with blowing intercooler hoses, which is always fun. No matter how many times Ive heard it, that big loud WHOOOMP is actually kinda cool sounding. :D

So, Ive come to the conclusion that (with a very free flowing exhaust) the turbo (with the restriction of a stock IC) just doesnt seem able to flow more than about 285-290 whp worth of air, at least on my car. But, I guess I cant complain seeing as how Im about 20 feet off the compressor map.

Thanks to John for the playtime on the dyno.

Insane. Is that intercooler any different than the TII ones? Boy would I like to see what kind of power you would have if you could hold 23psi up high

Its more or less the same.

But, this small stock turbo just cant do it.

i will have to say i was damn impressed with the car....it ran really good even with the hopping, blowing and clutch meltin it did. Sounds pretty mean with the exhaust and you should have seen the faces on the Honda guys that were in the shop, it was one of those "is that grandma car turbo? :? " type of look...classic!.... Anyhow it was nice to see the car run and thanks to Larry i have a dyno meet to try to reschedule cause frankly i heard a nice tune when i asked about dyno day event pricing. Thanks Larry for introducing me to your buddies there i also wanna thank them for being hospitable eventhough they had a few cars to tend to and the RT to ply with...ttyl guys.....How did you make it back to Tarpon Larry?

Yeah....thats the norm. Thats why I like these cars...they are different and no one expects that they are woth a @$#@.

Sorry I couldnt chat as much as I would have liked....but I was trying to keep my attention on tuning the car.

Heck, as soon as the clutch cooled down, the car was fine. I even boosted it on the way home! The clutch just has troubles in 4th gear from a lower rpm when the load on it is high. Other than that, it seems to hold fine.

great runs Larry! , you sure came close of hitting the 300 hp mark on that stock little turbo, my 8 Valve is also having trouble in the HP dept. due to the stock turbo but will see what happens when i get my dynoed in 2 weeks, i'll see you there Dan :D

The important part is "make everything work"

Holy mackerel.

It turns out my BOV was leaking a little and once I removed it, I can now hold about 3-4 more psi up top (17-18 psi or so....It was hard to see exactly where the gauge was as I was trying to keep the road and not go to jail.) The car really feels like a damn rocket.

I took the car out earlier this evening and the car will spin 3rd gear all the way to redline. Yeeehaw.

I begged and pleaded to get on the dyno tomorrow, but John is booked solid. Boo Hoo! Dynoing in this cold weather would be a treat.

stock BOV leak around 15-16psi, i hope John saved a spot for me so i can tune it a little before track day since he was busy last week too.

HAHHAHAA! Stock BOVs BLOW UP at the boost Im running! I destroyed two of them in a row on my last R/T. They literally explode in half!

My BOV now isnt stock, its a Turbo XS Type H RFL. Its not the BOVs fault that its leaking. Its the fact that the pressure drop across the IC is so great that the pressure on one side of the valve is much higher than the other and the spring isnt designed for accomodate that.

Jeff-

I had planned on it, but theres no way this clutch is going to hold a standing start. Id have to turn the power waaaay down and that wouldnt be fun :x

The clutch also wont hold full throttle in 4th gear at all, and Ill certainly need 4th as 3rd tops out at 93-94 mph. I think the only reason the clutch holds the lower gears is because my cheap @ss tires spin.

its not too hard at all to convert to 5-spd. CDM has all needed parts in stock most of the time.

Larry, I can't believe John didn't mention this but we have seen turbo cars seriously colapse those cheap cone filters because they are so restrictive.
Joe with the gunmetal DSM had one on his car when he rebuilt the motor, it folded in on itself while he was making a run on the dyno, then sprung back out when he let off. when we noticed it we took the filter off, it was so restrictive that the car would not idle without it, had to retune the ecu to get the car to idle.

buy a good K&N for the next time you go to dyno, I'm pretty sure you might see a difference, especially up top.

I think he did mention something about that, but Im a cheapskate. Plus, its cool to say that youve got a Pep Boys filter and not a K&N.

The filter doesnt seem to be causing any problems and certainly doesnt collapse on itself, but next time Im on the dyno, Ill make a run with and without the filter and see if there is a gain.

a filter is a filter... as long as you can spin it!
