Engine will appear in 2003 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Pickup
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Michigan, December 18, 2002 - Ricardo, Inc. today announced that it served as a strategic engineering partner in the development of the Chrysler Group’s all new 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8 engine for the 2003 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup.
Co-located with the Chrysler Group cross-functional team, Ricardo engineers, designers and CAE engineers were responsible for supporting the design, analysis and development of the all-new engine – which launched production in July of this year.
The new engine was created largely within a digital environment using the latest computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided engineering (CAE) techniques and tools, including Ricardo’s WAVE and VALDYN software products. Analysis and simulation was a significant factor in reducing program time and investment.
While big horsepower and torque numbers were requirements in creating a new HEMI V-8, current requirements for fuel economy, emissions, sealing, light weight and a small package envelope presented challenges the 1960s HEMI team did not face. CAD/CAE integration was a key success factor in development of the new HEMI engine.
The 2003 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Pickup Truck was designed to be as durable as it is powerful. It boasts the 345 horsepower HEMI Magnum as standard equipment, a full 100 horsepower increase over the previous 5.9L V-8.
“We’re proud to be a part of the development of an engine that is known for its high performance standards,” said Jeremy W. Holt, president of Ricardo, Inc. and executive director of Ricardo plc. “The Chrysler Group’s new 5.7L HEMI engine takes the HEMI heritage to the next level.”
With its North American headquarters in Van Buren Twp., Mich., Ricardo has been a world-leading technology provider of research and design services for automotive manufacturers and tier one suppliers since 1917.
The company provides expertise ranging from designing and developing engines, transmissions and drivelines to integrating vehicle systems, and creating software solutions to developing gasoline, diesel, hybrid and fuel cell technology.
Ricardo employs approximately 1,400 people worldwide – 85 percent of whom are highly qualified multi-disciplined professional engineers and technicians – at its technical centers in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Czech Republic.
A public company based in the U.K., Ricardo plc posted sales of $220 million in fiscal year 2002 and is a part of the FTSE techMark 100 index – a group of innovative technology companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.
